If you are looking for the 2009-P Jefferson nickel anywhere west of the Mississippi River, I wish you good luck. To date, I have searched 27 full boxes and not ONE 2009-P Nickel! I did however find around 7 2009-D nickels. These are both very difficult to find.

I managed to find the low mintage 1950 (plain) and 1949-S, but no mas on the 09-P. I ended up coughing up a 1.50 for one 2009-P.

I found one. wasn't in the greatest condition, though.

I'm at 16 1/2 boxes and I'm in the same boat.
Not one single 2009 P, but I do have:

1938 s -----------4.1 mill mintage
1939 s -----------6.6 mill mintage
1949 s (x2) -----9.7 mill mintage
1950 --------------9.8 mill mintage
1951 s (x4)------7.8 mill mintage
2009 d (x132)

and I have 7 buffalos and 13 silver War Nickels.

by the way I'm way west in san diego.

Agreed these are tough to find today ... but not impossible.

I live on the Right Coast ... Maryland ... and have a tube full of MS63+ 2009-P plus a handful of 2009-D.

I still claim that in time the full mintage of 86,640,000 will find its way out of bank vaults and this coin will become common.

I agree with nicklesearcher, beware the flood. Pulled 8 silvers & 9 buffs this week, thing's seem to be resorting to pre-'11.
Maybe it's the heat. BTW, all the buffs from the same box.

I think the hopper batches for the rolling machines are smaller where I'm at. Every once in awhile
you can find mutiple proofs, same box.

@murrellington: I'm in SW Florida and I get about 10-15 2009-P per Brinks box. I even get a smattering of 2009-D. If your sister is in that area, I'm sure you'll have no trouble. Actually, probably anywhere in the ATL Fed is a good place to look for them.

I don't necessarily agree about the "coming flood" of these '09 Jeffersons.
A few more 10 or 20 thousand, nationwide, are possible to be sitting somewhere, but I think they're already all out there, they're just a REALLY LOW MINTAGE......so they couldn't ever really be "common" IMO.
And of this small number of '09 Jeffersons minted, whenever a collector found one, it was/is most certainly snagged up and put away.

Anyway, I live in Northeast Kansas, and I managed to find several '09 P's......and a nice batch of the D's too.
But I searched a couple boxes a week for MONTHS to find those !

After reading this thread, I went through the change on my dresser and I found a few 2009-Ds and I'm in Austin, TX. No Ps.

I think it's more that the distribution is uneven than the mintage is so low that they're genuinely scarce. There are enough 2009 Nickels to go around given the size of the numismatic community. The mintage of 2009 coins was low because the economic downturn caused everybody to cash in their change jars. Geographical disparities in the timing and severity of the recession meant that some Fed districts got very few new coins and others got more.

If mintage is 86 million, they are common. They are probably sitting in bank vaults right now and perhaps will slowly come out over next few years.
