One has to always remember: "Buy The Coin" and not the holder..THESE bottom basement self slabbers are always 3/4
grades over what the true grade would be,,IF IT WOULD EVEN GRADE...the problem is many get taken by these guys over bidding for melt plus valued coins...A quick glance at this one, has so many hairlines It might make MS 61 I would never touch one of those grading companies coins...

Went to Ontario coin show over the weekend. Looked around, it was a lot of fun. I showed my gf a table with a bunch of Morgans and one that had been harshly polished sitting next to a few others. They were all raw in nylon flips labeled "CH BU". The funny thing was a couple of them were actually 63's or so.

Anyway, I pointed out the difference quietly (I just said, "these are interesting, do you notice the difference between those two?") and we quietly walked away to discuss. We found another table full of Morgans and I saw one labelled "EF Cleaned", which it was.

I ended with the moral of the story: "that guy in the corner can't be trusted for ANYTHING he's got on his table, no matter how nice or real it looks - so just don't waste your time when you see something like this. This guy here is a lot more likely candidate for somebody I'd do business with."

Aladinslamp - I'd also like to share the converse of that point. It's VERY true - and I'm sure you now this, but for others who might not have thought about it, let me put this point.

Buy the coin, not the holder. But the holder don't hurt when it's right!

I've recently been interested in buying some neat coins. The dealer I'm working with mostly is extremely well-known in the niche and very well trusted (indeed, he's a CAC submission house for his niche). He's selling a coin in a holder a lot like this one Adam_E shared. It can't be trusted. It's not the nicest coin, but it's certainly desirable, just for what it is.

It IS odd that he's selling it this way. I can't figure that out, but it's not up to me. He gives the coin his HONEST appraisal and grade (obviously different than the holder grade), and prices it accordingly. Since this dealer is the one selling it, I have no doubt about the coin, no matter what holder it's in. It's priced exactly right, too. But I don't want it because if it's in an iffy holder, the previous owners probably tried the better TPG's and couldn't even get a genuine out of them.

Okay, this coin is genuine, I know that because of the reputation of the dealer (perhaps I'm naive, but I don't think so).

BUT my point is this. This dealer selling this coin, asking a fair price - he'll get it.

Now ME? A nobody? What about when I decide to upgrade? I might be stuck with it because it may not be possible to get it into a real holder - because let's face it, I can say all I want about the history of the coin, who it came from, what I paid, but in the end, that holder is going to hurt me. And if that's the best holder available, it's simply not a coin for me.

I never imagined this happening or fathomed the possibility, so I thought I'd share the story because it's an important point, I think...

NOW, what I could do is go to the dealer and say, "Hey dealer, I'll pay for the submission if they'll bite - see if you can get PCGS to give that a Genuine slab. That's all I want." And then the problem is solved.

I suppose I might yet do just that, but since I'm not that into the coin in the first place, I think I'll just let it be somebody else's problem. =)

Delaner you are correct...If on an ebay thing.. And its listed as M67...you have to be suspect...If they guy you are dealing with, and by the way in time you know the dealer and that your being treated fairly..THEY would never offer you this coin at MS 67...but at what it truely grades....An this is my point....I didnt check back to see if it actually sold for thew 42 bucks...with 40 minutes left...I didn't see DMPL from the ebayers photo but what you posted was a nice PL/DMPL
My point being many post a photo and somehow have an MS grade written on the coin or in cases like this on the holder...
Like my friend terry has often said, IF you don't know how to grade....then you are at there mercy of what they appear to imply its grade is...and that can mean hundreds of dollars between grade points Gain or loss depending on where you stand in the coin you purchase....
Thanks for you POST...it shows a "REPUTABLE" dealer will inform you of what the condition actually is despite who graded/over graded it....his actions speak LOUDLY to satisfy his customers and there investment...UNLIKE ebay

"ANGS" is among the worst offenders of numismatic sensibility. However, it's been my experience that very, very few of these travesties manage to reach truly disappointing prices. The coin which inspired this thread went for $51 shipped, perhaps a bit high but not a tragedy.

Yeah, there are stories, and every once in a while we here have to tell someone how much money they just wasted, but the average ebay buyer is a little more sophisticated than I've previously thought.
