SO, I've already started my Barber quarter set, and had been debating as to whether or not to really delve into. Well, I saw this 1896-s up for sale and it seemed like a good price to me so I went for it.......thoughts?

Now that I've got a major key, I will likely be a bit more serious about this series. The problem is that the other 2 keys are basically valued up exponentially compared to this one!

When I saw the title, I knew this was you John!
Nice looking original coin :)
Tough coin without breaking the bank. I would much rather have an original, low grade coin then lets say, a F coin with environmental issues etc.

Nice pick up on the 1896 S. My set is complete for the lack of the 96-s, 01-s and the 13-s. Some day I hope to have the remaining 3. Granted they are all circulated examples, but several are in VG/VF condition. Congrats on the 1896-S pick-up. Someday

Thanks everyone! The obverse looks G4 imo, but the reverse is darn near FR2. I guess they averaged it out. It's not the strongest AG I've seen, but it is the cheapest one..lol. This barber set is going to have to be a budget set, because the 1901-s I will hopefully eventually buy will definitely be a lower grade. Now I just need to talk nolawyer into selling me his. ;-) Does anyone else on this forum own a 1901-s? Just curious.

My local coin shop has one in AG. I think they want $3k or so for it. I did not look too close and that was as of a month ago.

That's exactly what I am doing with my Barber dimes, budget set. I have the biggie, 1895-O in G6 and just picked up the 01-S and 13-S.
Keep us posted John!

Yeah, I envy that 1895-O Dave, she's a beaut! Did you ever send her into be graded? I still need to talk you into completing an slq set! Your pretty much half way there cost-wise with the 1916. :-)

No, I thought about getting her certified then doing what you did with your Dansco and the velcro...awesome idea!

I do have some SLQ's, and will start this set sooner or later

I love that 1916!

Great score Johnny! That seller really has a past. Maybe that's why you got it for openers. For whatever reason - getting it makes you da man!

One of the few I'm missing too. Only missing a few and that 96S is one of them also. Think I'll go out and buy a roll of those. That is one series where there is a real lot of low minted coins.

I would be happy with a certified FR2 01-S just to have it for the set. I have even seeing PO1 coins. Still big $.

The 1896-S Barber half is a pain in the posterior as well. Finally picked up one at Hertage Auctions in F12 condition but paid an arm and a leg for it.

I do know that the entire 1896-s series, Dimes, Quarters and Halfs are scarce in higher grades but the Quarter is the king for this series.

Good score and a great price. I have a friend that has one in roughly F12 condition and won't part with it at all. LOL
He bought it 25 years ago for a mere pittance, talk about interest....

Just received it today, here are some closeups. The obverse has a complete rim, and should grade G4 imo. The reverse I think is FR2. Interesting toning on the reverse, my guess it's been in a whitman album for a while. It would be a nice coin to have only the obverse showing!

I'd love to see pics of your barber? From what I have read, this is acutally a tougher date than the 1913-s and they have a lower TBG population, but the fact that only 40000 13-s coins were minted, this alone really ups the demand.
