1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent graded by ANACS. Pretty cool variety I think! I'll post grade tomorrow if you'd like to guess.

Nice coin! Knowing ANACS, some kind of problem. I will say XF Details.

THAT is a nice one!! I think ANACS would grade it VF-35. I'm glad to see that your also has a "cigarette" in it's mouth! Mine is pretty noticeable!

I will go with Vermont on this one and say ANACS EF-40.

I would go with EF-40 for details. There are some noticeable scratches on the obv.

My first impression was vf details, damage around 4 oclock, but Moe's looks like the same damage, so that may be die problems. vf net in any case.

Quote: My first impression was vf details, damage around 4 oclock That is the diagnostic for the Spike Chin variety, not coin damage Apparently, a screw/bolt landed between two dies creating the marks. What appears to be scrape marks on the coin is actually die damage from the threads and the chin spike is from the head.

Quote: Moe, you got that coin unattributed Not really. I bought it as an 1804 HC "Spiked Chin", I just didn't know the "scratches" on the Obverse 4 o'clock position was from the screw that caused the "spiked chin" in the first place! I truly thought it was PMD. I was set straight by my CCF brethren/sisteren. That's what this Forum is all about! As the plaque on the statue of Emil Faber reads in the iconic movie classic Animal House, "Knowledge is Good".

That's one reason I like that coin so much--it's a record of the early minting process.

Well... I'm back... Thank you all for contributing! Always learn a lot here and appreciate the friendly atmosphere. The wife is not nearly as interested when I show her my latest finds. So I'm thinking (and hoping) my sub-par photography skills contributed to the lower grades. Noticing glare from the lighting and some of the detail might have been lost. She looks great in hand for sure. As mentioned, the cigarette and thread marks at 4 o'clock are diagnostics for the variety. Check out my last acquisition an 1810/09 Classic Head later tonight. Yes... I got bit by the copper bug recently! Grade assigned AU50.
