Normally I interpret a rough surface on an otherwise no-obvious-problem coin as a possible sign of cleaning, but I'm seeing a rough surface on pretty much every Type 1 Standing Liberty I look at, even high-end graded coins. Is it just normal (intentional?) for that coin? The roughness seems absent or at least less prevalent on later issues...

I haven't noticed this in my SLQ's. In fact, my most beautiful coin of the lot is the 1917P Type 1. Check our listing for the 7070 tomorrow and you'll see all the Type 1's.... OK.. I'll jump the gun. Here's my Type 1 SLQ.. Paleoguy

That has the rough texture in the fields that I'm talking about, so I guess it's normal.

If you mean the background "fields" of the coin are not "mirror finish"-smooth then the SLQ does have a rough texture. (Now I understand more what your question was about...I was holding off answering in order to understand more what you were asking, or if someone else knew the answer already !)

The Standing Liberty quarter is a BIG favorite around here!

More specifically, in comparison to later date SLQ, e.g. this one.

I found this article which talks about it. Apparently it was the style medalists used at the time, and it was used on the other new 1916 coins also. Adolph Weinman apparently feuded with Charles Barber about it.
