So I went to the bank on Monday to get another box of cents. Got all comfy in my sorting chair, television on a good show, buckets all set up to the "keep, copper, cull" piles. Open the box and what do I find, 50 String and Son's wrappers with fresh 2011 P's. I was a little bummed. I haven't even cracked a roll, but on the end of each roll a lot of the cents have a small circular scratch that is just inside of the rim. My guess is that this is from the clamp and wrapping process. The question is, do I just open these and return them to the bank (my bank won't take rolled coins)....or do I toss them in the back of the safe? I'm positive that the visible damage decreases any value considerably, but how much? I only ask because I see people are buying fresh BU rolls on ebay for 2-3x face value...but with the scratches, I wouldn't consider these to be brilliant.

The damaged end rolls (just about any modern, machine made rolls) are only damaged on the ends (normally), so you would still have 48 of 50 fresh coins. However, I am fairly certain that 2011 cents are very plentiful, so I would hold on to a couple rolls, but I don't think that you have any great rarity there.

Spend them. We need more 2011 coins in circulation.

Ooh, I'm glad there are some nice 2011 doubles. Makes me excited about searching pennies again.

Thanks for the responses....I just did the same thing, this time with a box of nickels. Nothing like sitting down in front of the tv with my sorting bins and going CRAP.
Gotta find a bank tomorrow that will trade them out for me. Most banks around here have coin machines though, so they won't accept rolled coin (hopefully they'll make an exception for shotgunned S&S rolls.
I don't spend money on anything but gas, my wife buys everything else. It's better that way.

That depends how old you are. If you are young, and can afford the %25, consider holding on to them. The crappy zincolns corrode so quickly, you may be happy you have them in 30-40 years. Will the US cent even be minted then? The second year of a new series... especially unsearched... could be a goldmine on ebay someday.
