First-5oz-ATB-Variety-Discovered-And-Recognized-By-NGC
The following is a press release from NGC

The first variety in the America the Beautiful five ounce silver coin series has been discovered and will now be recognized by NGC. The variety, designated "Light Finish" by NGC, is so far seen only on the 2010-P Grand Canyon Specimen issues.

The U.S. Mint strikes two types of five ounce silver America the Beautiful coins: the bullion version and the collector version. The collector version is vapor-blasted to create a matte finish, a stark contrast to the brilliant surfaces of the bullion issues.

Two distinct surface finishes of the 2010-P Grand Canyon Specimens have been observed: coins with the regular coarse matte finish and coins that have a slightly reflective satin finish. The latter type, designated "Light Finish" by NGC, is distinct from both the bullion version and the standard collector version. This hybrid type is easily identified -- it has the same "P" mintmark as the other Specimen issues, but its surfaces are not granular and are more lustrous. The Light Finish coins are also dissimilar from the fully brilliant surfaces of the bullion issue.

It is not known how many of the 27,000 Grand Canyon Specimens struck by the Mint are the Light Finish variety. It is believed that the majority are of the standard matte finish.

Collectors can submit their 2010-P Light Finish Grand Canyon five ounce coins under the VarietyPlus service for designation on the holder. The fee for VarietyPlus is $10.

NGC may be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 4776, Sarasota, FL 34230 or by calling toll-free at 800-NGC-COIN (642-2646). NGC's email address is Service@NGCcoin.com.

"light finish"

Sigh, I knew it wouldn't be long until TPGs found a way to get people to submit coins for variety attribution.

I'm getting tired of the game they play.

Hmmm....this is why I don't collect these coins, or any modern coins for that matter. I have my types, but thats it.

"Light finish?" We're really grasping at straws here, aren't we?

The TPG's should recognize any and all coins and mark
as noted if SL, SPL, PL etc. They do it with morgans.
Why not all. The SP they gave it should actually read SPL
Not a variety just a polished die.

I have one with NO finish at all. It's extremely difficult to get an image of this NO finish.

I have seen pics of the light finish and of one coin which is almost semi PL in appearance. The reverse is beautiful and flawless on these coins. However, the obverse of this coin in general has issues.

Somewhat surprised no one here got any of these coins (Light / No finish).

Fwiw, they could have come up with a different designation / title for this errors as it was a "production issue" or lack there of.

Kick me and call me @@$@$@@# Stupid. I had a horrible day, stung by a wasp 4-5 times, PF SAE's were lost.. To sum it up I was in a bad mood when I opened my ATB Grand Canyon. Right away I noticed the finish was different, The stressors of the day were melting away. Then I noticed scratches Going from under N & I in United down through Washington's neck. I became enraged forgetting all about the different finish, threw it back in the box, and raced it back to the post office. My replacement coin was already on its way here. When I read Bizybackson post. Quickly remembering Hey I have one of thoses......Wait I had..... Ohhh nooo. Lets just say it still stings.

This past weekend I finally got a chance to look at my Grand Canyon puck and it turns out I have one without the vapor blast :joy; .As mentioned even my GC has hairlines on both obverse and reverse. Here is a picture of my Grand Canyon.

Has anyone heard from PCGS how they are going to treat these pucks?

Thanks

Just looked at my Grand Canyon 5 oz. Was surprised to see I had a "light finish". Should I send to NGC?

I just read about the "Light Finish" variety of the 5oz 2010-P Grand Canyon coin, and when I checked mine I thought "YES! I have one". But on closer inspection I found a flaw. In the upper vee of the letters N and Y of the word CANYON, I found something that looks like gouging or infilling. A comparison of the N's in "GRAND" does not show this effect.

Has anyone else found this? Would this reduce the value?

I also checked my other 5oz coins and found what looks like a crease across the top of the letters SPRIN on the Hot Springs coin.

I'm not having much luck with this series.

I have probably viewed more Grand Canyon vapor blasted coins than anyone except for the mint and the grading services. I have seen close to 300 of them. Of the 300 I saw, roughly 30 of them were "light finish", and 1 of them had no finish.

I also checked hundreds of other 2010-P vapor blasted coins, and was probably the first to find Yellowstone coins with the same variation in finish. Those were roughly 20% of the pile.

coppercoins, have you seen any other Grand Canyon coins that have an infill of the letters N and Y of the word Canyon? And now that you mention "no finish", I would say of mine that one side has a light finish and one side has no finish. I'll have to send it off for grading just to be sure.

I wouldn't send it to a TPG, unless the prices rise dramatically on the light finish variety. I checked Modern Coin Mart on a lark yesterday, they seem to have a range of the Grand Canyon from SP64 at $369.00 all the way to SP67 at $499.00, all graded by NGC. I doubt these varieties will get alot of attention now, as the mintage is already so small @ 27,000, IMO. That and the continued confusion between the bullion coin and collector still exists, not helping matters any.
