Does anyone have a comparison image of a Canberra/Wales and a Canada 1981 20c? The McDonald guide says that the letters are different (flat for Canberra/Wales, curved for Canada), but the only image I've been able to find is of the curved Canadian letters: http://reviews.ebay.com.au/1981-Aus...1:LISTINGS:2

One has somewhat thicker and higher letters than the other. I doubt these variations will register on my cheap camera. You'll see the rims are different too, the reeds are weaker on one and the edge is slightly rounded while the reeds are very sharp and squared off on the other. I noticed the variations and kept note of them but was not aware they were struck by two different mints so I do not know which is which I'm afraid. Thanks for the info on it, by the way. Someone who knows Aussie coins better might be able to help.

Okay, I'm back. My camera isn't going to do the job. But heres what I have. The Canadian mined one has a weaker strike, sharper reeds, the "curved" copperplate looking letters, uneven claws on left paw. Camberra has a better strike, thicker rim, regular letters, weaker reeds, more defined claws.

I see the difference in letters now. Unfortunately the coins are a bit worn so it's hard to make out the other differences. Thanks for your help Riverbreak.

You should check out the listings made by Brissyboy. I'm sure he has posted pictures in he past.

Probably. A gentleman and scholar. Although I wouldn't use ebay as a yardstick for anyone's credentials. He has provided significant input to Maccas and is recognised for his knowledge and contribution to the decimal section.

I doubt that's him. Try searching older CCF Aussie Forum posts by brissieboy is more likely what Yass was referring to.

I searched and couldn't find anything, but no worries, I see what the difference is now.

Quote: CCF Aussie Forum posts by brissieboy Oops, typo on my part. Brissyboy is correct. No relevant threads with posts by him, so maybe they've been archived.

What's CAB? Also, I'm looking more for verification that Canadian 4 claws exist as I've got 19 in front of me and all have a short fourth claw.

I believe that CAB is a reference to Coin and Banknote magazine - I don't know if they have a web site, but google should help you there or at least find references for it...

I don't think Google will be much help. Stop by your local newsagent and pick up a copy of "Australasian Coin and Banknote Magazine" (shortened to CAB) current issue July 2011. August edition should be out in the next week I think.

LOL - yes, I didn't mean you could google a copy (although that would be cool) but rather that google would tell you about CAB... d'oh! will try to not me so vague...
