I was thinking about this today. I have been coin collecting since I was an early teen. So it is almost 40 years or so that I have been collecting. In the past year I got my 16 year old son interested. Its fun, he's concentrating on currently available coins so something like the State & Park quarters are great. I gave him a bunch of my old dupes I had and he just finished his Jefferson nickels recently with some additions of some ebay purchases and a visit to a coin show recently. Has anyone else had an experience like this? Its really nice to be able to share your hobby with someone. I show my wife my collection and she just doesn't appreciate it at all.

I went many many years with no one to share with. After 25 years of collecting I found a guy at work who was collecting. My collection has grown much faster the last couple of years because of him. It's so much harder to collect like you should when your all alone in the endeavor. I think I would have had a much larger collection had I had someone to share with.

My youngest has been interested for the last 10 yrs or so, got him hooked with Xmas gifts from the mint. I've stopped with those sets in the last couple years, but he likes to hit the local shows, and has some interests in silver, particularly likes Mercs. It is nice to have someone close that shares your interests; when I show my older son our collections I get a big yawn...

I have not had a collecting buddy with a body since I was 14 mowing the lawn of a coin collector who traded me coins for labor "funny how some things never seem to change",My Dad just about croaked when he found out I mowed the guys lawn for five one cent coins, this forum is filled with virtual collecting buddies though and I appreciate everyone of them.

i like that last point Metalman. Its funny but I keep my son's want list with me too and occasionally I see something on ebay that he needs. I will frequently pick it up for him and most times he offers to pay, but then again he doesn't have a job so sometimes I just give him stuff. But I still love it.

As of right now, I have no real buddy, although I do have a couple of sympathetic friends and family members. My son is three, but I hope he will be my collecting buddy one day.

My 14 year old son could not care less. One day he went through a few albums of walkers with me to sort out some dates and he thought he was being punished. Maybe when he gets a little older....

I also look to CCF for my "Collecting Buddies". I have already leaned a lot and continue to learn something everytime I log on to CCF. This newly acquired knowledge has put me in a better position to make informed decisions related to coin collecting.

It is really a difficult thing nowadays. What your asking is for someone to know you have something of value and with things the way they are today, not a great idea. Of course that too depends on basically where you live. In many areas where people could leave a door open while they go out shopping, most don't have excessive valuables. And those that do, most people in the area would know if someone took it and who they are. In the average large city areas, letting anyone know you have coins, guns, stamps or anything of value, is really dangerous. I meet people at coin shows all the time and some I've known and/or talked to for years. And yet not even sure of their names and they really don't know mine. It is really a sad thing when you have something you'ld really like to brag about and can't even hint at that. I always remember a freind in school that used to brag about his coins and showed them to anyone that wanted to see them. Naturally his home was robbed and all coins gone. I have a Son and he and his wife could care less about coins. Wife too thinks they are a waste time. If there were anyone in the neighborhood that collects coins, they no longer mention that. Two robberies in one block adn mostly coins were the reason makes for secrets a necessety. Sure would be nice to have people to discuss coins with but way to chancy.

I totally agree, just carl.
The only place I tell people I have coins is at my dealers stand at a flea market in the town over.

Besides the fine folks here on the forum, my "coin collecting buddies" (being an Australian, I'd call them "mates" rather than "buddies") are in the two coin clubs I'm a member of.
As one of my fellow club members often tells people, what's the point in having a collection if you can never talk about it with or show it off to somebody?
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
