They say to buy the book before the coin. What is the definitive book on Canadian Small Cents that lists (with pictures) all of the varieties and known errors available?
Thanks! -Les

There isn't one. The zoell books from the 1960's have many varieties. Other than that the best bet is just buying the latest Charlton catalog.

by small cents books, you may be looking at buying the storage book with the list of all the coins down the side. I've seen many of these books, usually the have rows of 4 or 5 coins per row with little slots to slide the coin in. In the front of the book is a list of ALL the small cents that you can fit in the book, some leave blank spaces for unknown varieties.
Honostly you don't have to buy a book before you start to collect. I started collecting while working in construction because I kept finding old canadian coins. From that point I just started keeping every CANADIAN coin I could get my hands on that was different. I eventually opened my heart to forgein coins after recieving a large amount from my grandfather who had collected them from his many world trips. I know have quite a substantial collection of Canadian and World coins ( mostly canadian tho! ) and I'm always after ANY coin that has a peice of canada on it (wether it be the name, a province or anything canadian, I want it! ) This is why I LOVE to search throught the random bins at coin stores. You never know what your gunna find! ( found myself a 1927 confederation of canada token in one once. These were handed out to the school children in 1927 to celebrate the confederation of canada, just like the schools handed out the millenium dime to my generation )
happy hunting!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am surprised there isn't a book showing all the varieties. I am spoiled since there are several books on various US coins... I just wanted a good source book to be able to turn to. Well, if there isn't a book, are there some recent web sites you could recommend that show different varieties of Canadian Small Cents? Thanks! Les

Anyone familiar with this book? The Book of Canadian Coins and Their Varieties by Pierre Charest? I couldn't find it on Amazon. so it must be available only privately. They have a download version I am considering purchasing. Les

The Charest download is very handy I enjoyed having it on the computor to look up something rather than have to dig up a book. The grading examples are excellent, unfortunetly mine got lost but I am going to purchase another soon ,I liked it.

The book by Charest is far from listing all the varieties. It is however a start and includes all denominations. With the zillion coins the Mint is now producing every years this book will have to be 2 foot thick in a couple of years. If you only want to collect the small cents, there are others to choose from and many good internet sites to check.

I just got a copy of Charlton today, and it looks great! I wish the photos were in colour, but you can't have it all I guess, lol.
Thanks for sharing opinions!

merclover...take a gander at this site as well. There is a lot of good information on it for Canadian coins. Some have pictures and a good start for some of the more well known errors/varieties. Take a look. It is well worth bookmarking. Edit** Forgot to add the site. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

Up to now Coins and Canada website has been pretty much my only error resource, I sort my coins by year then inspect several hundred of the same year at a time after viewing what error or varity pics they show. I finally bought a coin book a digital copy of the Charest book 9 hours ago, however the access email still has not arrived which is supposed to be instant, now I fear I'll need to wait for him to get back from his posted holidays. (and yes I checked my junk folder)
