OK here's the deal. I'm in Mexico at the moment. A friend of my wife sent a bunch of coins to me to buy. He is not a coin collector and has no use for them. The package had 8 silver dollars Morgan/Peace and about 100 Buffalo nicklesMy wife tells me the dollars are worn and only a few of the nickles have full dates. So how much should I pay for this lot. I don't want to short change the guy but I certainly don't want to over pay. If I could see the coins I would know what to offer but this is a sight unseen offer. What would you offer?

Yeah that sounds good. Although it is below spot, so $250 might be better
Thats $30 per dollar and $10 for the buffs

My local coin shop is buying Morgan dollars at $27 each. They only pay $.06 for no date Buffalo nickels and $.40 for ones with a date. 8 x $27 =$216 100 x $.06= $6.00 100 x $.40= $40.00 So I would say pay $28 for each Morgan for $224 and since most buffalo's have no date maybe double what the coin shop would pay for no date, so that would be $12. Grand total around $236.

$225 to $250 seems about right. the cheaper the better, but anywhere in that range would be a fair offer.

1. If you don't know that person personally, I suggest you pass on the deal completely 2. Without seeing almost any coin today, might just be counterfeit. 3. I am not a coin collector, I know nothing about coins, my Mom, Dad, Aunt, etc. died and left me these. Except for UNSERACHED, to much like an ebay story. 4. By worn could be really poor, banged up, etc. and not worth more than melting if real that is. 5. Buffalo nickels too are really common in poor to no date conditions and sell for sometimes 3 for $1. Since your not there, have no idea of what is what and unless you have money to throw away, again, I suggest you pass on that deal.

Thanks for the advice all justcarl. The thought had crossed my mind but my wife though she claims not to know anything about coins is actually quite knowledgeable on the subject. She has also known this guy since high school and they are family friends. I suspect he does not want anything much for them but I feel I should pay him a fair price. The problem is partially solved as my wife told him I am offshore for a few weeks and would look at them when I get home. So I'll report my findings when I see them.

Not sure how "techy" your wife is, but a few quick hand held macro shots emailed to you could easily provide a ton of info.

Good. Unless that person is in really horrible need for cash, why not just wait a little. And if he is such a great family friend, he should have known you were not around. So why make those offers at this time? I am a cautious person so such things pop into my head. Maybe no big thing but a little time could be in order.

I completely agree justcarl. I am not on a fixed schedule so I could get called out any time. So people don't tend to know if I'm home or away.
