Would storing coins and paper money that are in holders inside a shoebox damage them? most of the coins are in hard plastic holders/air tites/slabs but the paper money are just in sleeves. I've aired it out for several days incase that matters.

I assume you're worried about something coming out of the shoebox and attacking the coins and/or notes. In that case, the answer is basically "no". The cardboard in a shoebox may be higher in sulfur than some other kinds of container, but I think you'd only notice a difference if you kept raw silver coins in there, in direct contact with the cardboard.

The main problem with a shoebox is the lack of positive protection - it does nothing to help keep out oxygen, moisture or atmospheric sulfur. But since your coins are mostly already well protected, that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

In my opinion, no. Beacause of many different factors such as moisture, fire, etc. I keep mine in a breifcase or inside a saf.

Get a cheap safe (it's better than nothing) and put a small amount of desiccant (I use DampRid available at Wal Mart). They will be more secure and the dessicant keeps the humidity really low.

If the breifcase is Leather, could be much worse than any shoe box.
Leathers are treated with all sorts of things to make them soft and last. Then too coated with dyes to make them the color of that case. And if that case is not ALL Leather, some too may be all sorts of plastics or other materials. In the past I've noticed keeping shells, Copper bassed such as Brass, in a Leather holster eventually makes the shells discolored.
As to the shoe box, there are really way to many variables to take the chance. A shoe box could be from anywhere on Earth, not necessarily from the same place as the shoes. And as you must know, much comes from China so you really have no idea what that box is made from.

Although a shoe box may be free, the end results may not be good. Such a safe, as noted here, are reasonably priced at places like Home Depot, Menards, Walmart and many other places. Also, if you check out the aisles in Walmart where they have numerous plastic storage containers, you may find one reasonably priced. Although, there too if the material is not known, could be taking a chance.

Man, it's really very sad that I (we) are forced to stash our coins ... my house is decorated in lots of dark, earthy colours, with wood trim and antiques ... I have an old oak desk with an old antique type-writer on it => the desk has sevral wooden shelves and slots where I store several leather coin albums (the whole atmosphere of the room is wonderful ... it's kinda like you've stepped-back into time) ...
but again, it's really very sad, for I know that I really "must" buy myself a safe to hide all of my wonderful treasures inside (what a drag) ...

One thing I did was I got a medium sized foot locker chest. It has a cloth lining (polyester / cotton blend I believe) and an aluminum frame and sides. Cost me about $20 but I'm able to fit all my dansco albums. You can usually find these at stores like BigLots, Fred Meyer, Target, Storables, Etc.

Cardboard is like a sponge, don't use it for coin storage. It will attract gases and moisture which will eventually find it's way to your coins.

Use multiple layers, for example: holder>plastic bag>tupperware type>huge ziplock bag.

That's a good idea, but your missing something. I'd put those into heavy duty ziplocks or put that whole locker into the giant ziplock. Actually, I'd bag each folder AND put the whole thing into a giant ziplock.
