I bought an 1883 W/C nickel for $6.50, which grades at least F-12 but is dark with corrosion. The value may be enhanced if properly cleaned, as the coin was so hideous that no one else bid on it. How can I safely clean it with ordinary household products?

you can try acetone to clean gunk off of it, but corrosion I dont think anything would get off because that is usually from the enviroment and in the metal. alot of coins that have been metal detector finds have corrosion on them and nothing can get it off without removing metal

You're free to experiment with harsh chemicals (it's your coin!), but I don't believe anything "gentle" or "safe" (as acetone is generally accepted to be) is going to help. Do a search on previous threads. There have been some extensive conversations on cleaning in the past month or so, and I don't think people are too keep on repeating themselves so soon.

Synopsis, try acid or ammonia and take precautions for your health.
