I've been putting together a collection of world coins minted by US mints. The largest problem encountered is how to present them. Most family members are not collectors, so I need to have some way of keeping their interest when looking at the coins.

What I am asking is your opinions on improving the appearance and information presented in this collection.

I decided to go with Dansco albums with plastic pages that hold 2X2's. I've added a "pretty" to ID the country prior to each set of coins. The biggest question is what to put on the 2X2's for information. Too much, too little, or what would keep interest of non-collectors & collectors.

Here's some pictures of the current state of affairs for this collections. Looking forward to your comments.

Not so sure about non-collectors, but I would put the date, denomination, KM#, metal composition, and country.
Looks like you have a pretty good collection of these.

Great looking collection. However, being a former teacher, I know the main battle most teachers have is keeping the interest of their students on the matter at hand. Infectious enthusiasm for the subject is the only answer. Finding ways to make the subject at hand is the key.

Flashy packaging can hold attention for a few minutes, but unless it is accompanied by questions and verbal statements meant to intrigue and challenge the listener, packaging alone will flop. Everyone, if not consciously - then subconsciously, will respond to a challenge. It is up to the presenter to find the common ground between himself and the "audience" and then allow his own enthusiasm to enter the listener through channels the listener enjoys.

First, I'd like to say that I like your "pretties". In fact I think I will borrow that idea for my collection.

OK...now for advice. Don't expect everyone to be interested. Even if you installed neon lights and a cotton candy machine in your Dansco's, you couldn't please everyone.

One idea may be to organize them by continent. Or geographical region depending on the size of your collection. Start each continent/region with a nice map of the continent/region. (The CIA Factbook is a great place to get nice maps) For countries that you have multiple pages of, you could replace your country info inserts with a full page map of the country.

You could also insert a few pages of information about the country. It's history, economy, and culture/traditions being top subjects. To appeal to the widest audience, I would keep the text short and include pictures (gleaned for free from the 'net).

Whatever you decide to do, I think we would all like to see it. You never know what "small" idea might inspire the next future coin expert.

You at least got me thinking about how to present my coins to non-collectors. Great topic!

About the 1933 Colombian 5 centavos, is that the only year the US minted for Colombia, or are there others? I know the first few years after 1886 they did, but I was wondering about other years. Because I have various dates of that particular design.

JangoFett -- Colombia 5 centavos minted in the US include 1902 (silver); 1933, 1935, 1938, 1946.

The Waterbury Mint (CT) also minted 5 centavos for 1886 (sm & lg to 5's), 1888, and 1902.

There is a 1938 6 centavos with a "B" mintmark on the reverse beneath the wreath minted in Bogota.

Also, there is a 1939 struck over the 1935 (1939/35)which wad done outside the US. I do not have this one.

The 1946 5 centavos exists with very large numerals in the date. This was not done in the US.

Thanks for the question. This is why I enjoy this series so much history and details on world mints. -- Terrell

Of those dates I happen to have 1886, 1935, and 1946 (the date looks large though). I also happen to have 1949 (I just right now found a really weak B under the wreath - how exciting!), 1919, and 1922. Also I have a 1933 one centavo. Was this one minted in the US also?

JangoFett - Yes, the 1 centavo of 1933 was minted in the US. The others were 1920, 1921, 1935, 1938. The same years also included the two centavo. -- Terrell
