My wife and I are in town for the week and while she's in her conference I'm planning on checking out some of the local coin shops. I've found several on the internet - all very close to our hotel but wondered if anyone had some recommendations. My goal is to get as complete a set of circulating coins as I can while I'm here by grabbing things from circulation. I'm not overly concerned with having all MS coins so a few dings won't matter much. I'm also hoping to pick up some pre-decimal penny and halfpenny coins. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

What part of town are you in? I am assuming the CBD? Downies are in the block arcade at 98 Elizabeth St. Max Stern is in Port Phillip arcade, 234 Flinders st. Peter Strich is at shop 5, 257 Collins st. Universal Coin company is at shop 11 Centre Place on Flinders St. These are all within the CBD and all within walking distance if you wish to do some sight seeing on the way. If you are in the CBD, might I also suggest a stroll through the Southbank shopping precinct and Casino. Great food, great shopping and plenty to do on this lousy rainy day.

Sean you beat me to it. There's another little shop I can't think of it's name right now. It's fairly new and has some collectable items as well.

Numisphil is another one (I think it could be the one with collectables the-purple-penny is referring to).

while you're there, try the local fish & chips: and if you're brave, ask for "flake".
there are some coin shops in the suburbs, but transport would be an issue.

Numisphil Pty Ltd, 354 Lonsdale St, Melbourne 3000, Victoria, Australia http://numisphil.com/contact.htmlThis guys shop is really small, tucked away, the shop is near an intersection,. The street has a blue notebook shop, then Numisphill, in Google maps it has an old picture of the shop used to be art city. He is a nice person. I got a good deal when he was clearing some coins on ebay, And parking is scary in the city, especially lunch time.

Are there any Pennys that you are looking for I sell them for 20c each at my local market. I bought a bulk lot to make a set for me and am selling spares at cost, its quite popular on my little market stall.
It only takes one or two days to post things to Melb. Pennys are not listed on my webpage I also sell circulated decimal coinage>> have a look you might find something..

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I went and visited two shops this morning and had a great time at both. I went to Peter Strich first. Great shop, excellent selection, and he was fine with letting me browse through his penny and half penny books as much as I wanted. I got some nice half pennys there to start out my type set, all in F or better. George V - 1935 George VI, old reverse - 1939 George VI, roo reverse - 1949 George VI, no IND:IMP - 1951 Elizabeth II - 1955 Elizabeth II, F:D - 1962 I wanted to check out another place before moving on to the pennys so I headed over to Downies. This was also a nice place and the attendant was quite helpful. He was puzzled about why I didn't want a straight year set and quizzed me about mints and varieties. I hadn't prepared for this - and was only looking for one coin of each type - so I failed miserably. He was still nice enough to show me what they had but wouldn't let me go through the books myself. I guess I should have memorized more forum posts here to impress him. That said, I did end up buying some nice coins there for my type set. George VI - 1938 EF George VI, no IND:IMP - 1951 aUNC Elizabeth II, F:D - 1964Y BU The last coin is an amazing toner. I'll post pics when I'm back to the states and have access to my photo gear.

check that 1938 Geo5 - that's a very rare mule ! the 1964 pennys had an unusual pink tone when they were new, and they really stood out from the others at that time. They were withdrawn in early 1966, and so they received very little circulation. Do you have much spare time there, or are you going to get out of the city ? If you want a pleasant walk, see Captain COOK's cottage - transported from England and re-erected in the Fitzroy Gardens. Walk east along Flinders Street, which changes name to Wellington Parade, and it's on your left (not even as far as the MCG). http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/mel...s.php?id=681

Peter -
I don't anything about 1938 George 5 mule. Does that have the old reverse rather than the roo? The one I got has the kangaroo. Thanks for the information about the '64 pennys. Do you know if it was a difference in the planchet? I really like the look of this coin!
I'm a big admirer of Cook (I do a lot or research in Hawaii) and was pretty excited when my wife and I went by there on Saturday. It's a great place - thanks for the tip. I still haven't had a chance to ask for "flake" when ordering fish and chips but maybe tonight at dinner.
Cheers!

1938 mule: I was pulling your leg. KG5 died in 1936. Your coin has the kangaroo, so it would be KG6.
