Isn't this a great design? If they were larger I would be all over this type.

Bought it years ago as a NGC MS 62 1799 1/4R. Under stereo microscope, thought it was a 1799/8. Now that I can blow it up to the size of a dinner plate, not so sure.

Any ideas on what is going on with the last digit in the date?

I agree, that design is excellent :) They kept it for a while - but those coins are so small !
Not sure what the overdate could be ... maybe a 7 or a 4 ...

Here is another one from Potossi :)

I would vote for either a 7 (based on shape) or a die chip/damage based on size. I am not aware of an 8/7 overdate but the series has never been heavily documented for varieties.

These coins are very tiny but the design is beautiful in it's extreme simplicity.

But the size must have caused difficulty for the elderly - such a tiny coin is so easily dropped.

Fantastic coin! I agree that there's something going on with the last digit of the date.

I like the simplicity of this coin too
While I know little about Spanish Colonials, my collecting specialty is overdates.
Swamperbob pretty well sums up my impressions of the date.
