Hello all, recently found this coin in MS 60-63. Any ideas on value of this VAM. Will be sending for grading, but I don't know if the TPG's attribute this coin. I'm really not a VAM collector, so my motto for any coin buying is "I buy what catches my eye" and this one did. Thank you for the help.

the grade would be the determining factor on price because from past sales I have seen this VAM go all across the board and they seem to be fairly rare in higher grades so if it is truly a 60-63 it could be a good find. The VAM-7A is a R7 coin so that means its super hard to find and the highest graded known example that I know of is graded MS-63. I do not think PCGS nor NGC attributes this specific VAM but I know ANACS does. Since this coin is so hard to find I would want another opinion on the VAM if you are not a VAMMer yourself instead of just a sellers attribution that its a VAM-7A

The 1878-CC VAM 7A is considered difficult to find, but not impossible. Typical grade for this coin is XF 40. If indeed it is a VAM 7A, and if indeed is it MS 63, and if it can be graded bt a major third party grading company (particularly PCGS) and if at that point you want to sell it, you have a better chance for someone to purchase it.

I looked at the VW discussion board for the pictures and I do not see any 1878-CC VAM-7A being discussed since March of 2010. NM I found it, I had the dash between VAM and 7A so it didn't show up edit: I looked at your pictures over there and the clashes you show seem to match (although some are in a common place) the one clash from the wing to the G on GOD is not all that common to be so strong at least. So there is a good chance you have the 7A correct. Would need full pictures of the Obverse and Reverse to be certain though

Thats the clash, but from what I understand, even thought its listed an R7 coin, its not really R7, however as OZ points out, higher grades will be much harder to find...there just has been no correction of the are value..in some years. most found are in lower grades...Even I have one...Nice coin you have there!

Oz,Gene has it right as far as how rare the 7a is. This type is very grade sensitive, upper AU to mint state is much rarer. With the Key being PCGS graded. I have 1 at NGC with about 9 other coins. I sent it to them to fill a 10 coin order. I think my coin is a mint state details coin. Some moron dipped the coin, if it grades out its a 62\63.
Anyway EDS of this G clash is also more desirable as the clash weaken and the WOW factor follows.

Gene,....When ever NGC sends my coins back we are currently at 9 weeks as of Thursday of last week. But that seems to be normal at the ANA in Rosemount PCGS 1 day service was when I asked on Tuseday "the first day of the show" the time frame they said. "You will get your coin back no later then Sat." But what would you expect for 150.00+ pre coin graded.

Here are the photos of the EDS of a Vam-7a. NOTE EDS on this type is subjective and not defined by a given gouge or scratch. It has everything to do with clarity and depth of the clash. I ran thought about 100 plus 78 cc's of Larry Briggs last weak he had 2 very worn ones. One of them was or is a PO2 or so and on this coin the date was almost not there as well as the cc or for that matter a Morgan. But you could make out the G clash line on the reverse. The other was a VG and you almost could not see any of the clash lines. I think this one will be one of the grade sensitive ones. From what I have seen this had many coins struck or they reduced the pressure on the strike if that is possible or last but not least re-polished the dies to remove or hide the clash marks. Anyway Upper grade as always is a good thing.
