Hi,

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this one.

There are three very attractive Italian 5 lira coins from the start of the 20th century.

Krause 34 only has a mintage of 114 so I can see why the XF valuation is $40,000

Krause 53 has a mintage of 60,000 (not an inconsiderable amount compared to other similar coins) and has a XF valuation of $2,200 - mush higher than other comparable coins of the time that were produced in similar amounts

Krause 56 has a mintage of 273,000 (a huge amount) and has an XF valuation of $10,000.

Can I assume that there were large quantities of these coins melted down - now making them rare rather than available in the quantities the mintage figuers suggest?

thanks

there are several legends related to the rarity and high quotation of 5 Lire 1914, for sute it is considered the best coin minted in the Italian Kingdom, and there are so few coins appearing in the market and always in a best grade, while 5 Lire 1911 appear much more often and in different grades from VF through UNC.
Some legends are:
- minted just before 1915 WWW, so few coins has been released and the other melted down
- stored in banks caveau from somebody that is releasing very slowly the coin to keep an high value
- used to pay War debits from Italy state and they are now stored in Switzerland banks caveau
Anyway the reality is: we have so few exemplaries of these coins owned from collectors, while other Italian coins from the same period minted only in 100.000 copies are owned from several collectors.

Hi,

Thanks for that reply. I thought there must be a story behind it. Perhaps one day a stash of them will be uncovered and released.

They really are beautiful coins though.
