Okay I'd like to say that first off I'm still quite excited and this post may be written in an erratic and rambling nature.

Alright, so it's been a couple months since I last did a box of nickels and since my sister needed to go to her bank anyway, I decided to come along and pick one up. (I got a $100 box of CWR nickels that the bank rolls with their own machine)

I got home and started going through them to find that I'd obviously found somebody's dumped collection! I was finding dozens of BU 60's and 70's dates. AND PROOFS. LOTS OF THEM. I found 17 proofs in this box. Almost all miraculously pristine. The list of proofs is as follows:

1951 (This one is special, I'll get to that later)
1957 x2
1959
1960
1961
1962 x4
1963 x2
1964 x2
1965 SMS
1982-S
1995-S

I also found 3 silvers: 1943S, 1944P, and 1945P

KEY DATES: I found a good amount of keys/semi-keys too!

1938S
1939D (XF condition, but some hard glue splotches on the reverse)
1939S x2
1942D
1948S
1951S

NOW. All this in itself was all fine and dandy and I would have been content if I had found nothing more. BUT IT DOESN'T STOP THERE!

As usual, I broke out my cherrypicker's guide and scrutinized all the possible die variety dates under my trusty dusty microscope. Well, apparently the 1951 proof has a nice double die obverse so I checked it out. I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw that I have found a 1951 Proof DDO Nickel!

I checked and double checked that this was the real thing, and I'm 100% sure. I'd estimate it grades at PR-63 or better! Gonna have to send this one in!

Now I know you all are mentally DEMANDING pictures, but I am sorry to say that I have none at the moment as I do not have to capability to photograph coins in the detail required to show the Doubled Die. I can try to get some pics of the coin in it's cardboard flip though so that you can at least see that it is really a 1951 Proof.

my day has been made!

I suppose I should add on that I made this topic as soon as I found the DDO. I still need to check the other proofs for varieties. so maybe more to come!

What part of the 51 proof is doubled? Legends, profile, date, etc...

TRUST is where the doubling is most visible, but there is also significant doubling on Jefferson's face.

Congratulations-

Someone else ran into some proofs in a box of nickels awhile back (can't recall who at the moment!)

Guess it's time to pick up another box of nickels!

...i picked up a box of nickels last week for fun

they were all new

so that begs the question...when the teller brings out my box and I notice that everything is shiny and new, should I then tell her that I don't want it? Or just suck it up?

Sure, just be polite and tell them upfront why you're searching nickels and why a solid box of new ones wouldn't suit your purposes. My tellers are always more than glad to oblige.
