I'm planning on being in Mexico later this spring and I want to take the opportunity to expand my collection of circulating coins. I'm not sure the best way to go about this, however. Much of the coins I get in change are pretty beat but I wonder if there are rolls in banks that would be less heavily circulated. Does anyone here have experience with this?

I'm nervous about going into a bank and asking for a bunch of rolls (especially in my broken Spanish - ) but I'm willing to give it a shot if I'll get some good coins. Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for the phrasing. Do you know how many of each denomination come in a roll? I'm most interested in pesos and above? Do they have boxes and can you get them easily? What about dumping them back? I'll probably need to open an account.

Direct and to the point - I like it.

XofG: I've gotten several of these silver 20$ in circulation and will be on the lookout for them when I'm there. I'm also looking for the 5$ coins commemorating the heroes of the revolution.

I live in Mexico and handle many coins every week. Your odds of finding silver centered $10 and $20 peso coins is slim to nil. In fact, $20 peso coins are very uncommon in general commerce. The odds of finding silver centerd $10 peso coins increases as you move south in the country. I always find a nice qty in Chiapas and Tabasco. Right now there are silver and gold buyers on every corner in Mexico. I live in a medium size town where the main drag is about 20 blocks long and there are at least 2-3 buuyers on every block. Makes it very hard to find silver.

Coins are not rolled in Mexico like in the US. They put their coins in plastic bags or scotch tape stacks of coins in 10's.
You can go into the banks and ask for $50 and $100 Peso coins and they will sell them, many times at face.

$20s aren't really used much anymore. The two that I have I am keeping forever! They just look too similar to the $10s. The $1 and $2 are similar also, but they haven't been changed in 20 years.

CincoPicos: Thanks for your response (and to the forum). This was the sort of information I was interested in. I'll be in Alamos, Sonora for most of the trip. It's a small town and might not have so many silver and gold buyers (but I could be wrong about that). It's good to know about the 50 and 100 peso coins - I'll certainly check those out.

Libertad: I have a few 20$ from back in the mid-1990s when I spent a lot of time in Baja. I wish I had managed to save more of them!

Hey Patrick,

As others have said look out for the .925 silver centered $10, 20 and believe it or not they actually minted a huge $50 peso coin. The $100 peso state series with silver centers are probably available at most banks for face value as CincoPicos stated.

If you get a chance make sure to check out the Alamos History museum in the main plaza.

They have a section on the Alamos Mint and displays of my favorite coins. The 8 Reales Cap & Rays which were minted there. (Mintmark As)
