Dear Coin Collecting Genius,
I do not know anything at all about collecting or buying coins (sorry...I know that is bad), but my father-in-law is an avid collector. I would like to buy him a coin this holiday season at one of the local coin shops in my area (suburban Chicago), but I have no idea what to get him. I have tried to do some research online, but I feel that I am only getting more confused. I would like to spend about $100 and was wondering if you could recommend what type of coin I should get him? (or what type of coin I should be looking for) Any advice would be great. Thank You

A 2006 gold 1/10 oz American Eagle is a nice coin that is within the 100.00 range, just in it's weight in gold. There are all kinds of coins. Maybe ask him what type of coins he collects and then we can better assist you.

Thanks for the advice. Where would I get a 2006 Gold 1/10oz American Eagle? Do I buy that at a bank? I'm sorry I know this is probably a dumb question.

well, first of all, you need to find out what he collects. If he collects gold coin then what was mentioned could be good, if he collects Morgans then that isn't going to help him a whole lot

Hi, Liz, welcome It's awfully difficult to buy a collectable for a collector without extensive knowledge of his interests and holdings. The safeset thing to do is to buy something you know he doesn't have because it's not out yet. I would suggest the newest commemorative from the US Mint: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10141If you buy the proof and uncirculated versions both, it should run you about $80 with shipping. Good luck

With your gift, remember to give him the link to this forum. I'm sure any collector of "all types" will enjoy many hours of reading about the various coin topics found here. Modern Commeratives are a very safe bet as they come packaged and in perfect condition at the mints issue price. You can order these coins directly from the mint. http://www.usmint.gov/index.cfm?flash=yes Older coins can be tricky to buy because their value is in their condition...So that you could spend $100 and get a Morgan dollar that is worth only $10 or perhaps $600 ( but few would sell a $600 coin for only $100.

If you're going to buy coins, I'd suggest buying everything slabbed by NGC, PCGS, ANACS, or ICG. You can be sure that the coins are authentic and their stated "condition" or grade is accurate so you know how much to pay.

Chances of finding gold coins at your average bank are slim to none, at least the ones in New Jersey. In this case I recommend a slabbed coin because certain integrity that comes with a slabbed coin..OR buying it straight from the US Mint. Buying from the mint, comes in a pretty box and you know it's genuine. You will pay a small premium for slabbed coins. The coin Amac44 posted is a slabbed(Professionally graded) 1/10th 2006 Eagle. Gold is a gift you can give to anyone, at least I think so. However as others stated you may want to inquire about what types of coins your father-in-law collects. Here is a link to a 2006 1/10th Gold Eagle direct from the US Mint. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=13238

Most coin shop will sell Gold and Silver coins, You should be able to find what ever you want in gold. Another thing is I know you wanted to get him coins. one question would be is do you live in the same city as your father-in-law if so you might want to see if you cna find the coin shop he goes to and the dealer might be able to help you. But it is alway safe ussauly to buy some from the US mint. But also if he collect alittle of everything then another idea might be to go to your local bank and get him 100 dollar in rolls of change. I know this is smomething alot of use would like since we like to roll search. that is a few Ideas. I usaaly get my father-in-law a Silver American Eagle but he lives in Norway so I know he can't get them. so another thing might be to look at a few of these links to see if there is any silver bullion coin he might like. http://www.pandausa.com/http://www.pandausa.com/http://www.mintproducts.com/[url http://www.downies.com/url] http://www.newcastlecoins.com.au/http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...alogId=10001[/url I have bought from all of these places and they are all safe. Good luck

Have you considered getting him a gift certificate to his local coin shop? Part of the joy of collecting is the shopping. He may want to pick out something for himself...

Exactly what I was going to recommend. My brother does this for me every year. It's so fun to make a trip to the coin store with Christmas money

You may want to consider getting him a gift certificate for the US Mint. Another option could be the American Silver Eagle 20th anniversary 3 coin set. The set consists of the silver eagle proof, uncirculated, and the new reverse proof. The mint is still taking orders for them.

If you are interested in making a trip into Chicago, Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. at 31 N. Clark St. is an excellent coin shop. He does internet/phone orders as well as shop walk-ins. Quite a few posters on this board would vouch for the honesty of HJB as a coin dealer. http://www.harlanjberk.com/
