I don't think you can go wrong with a little gold or a little more silver. A tenth ounce gold coin is a wonderful gift and is well within your budget. Although I don't have one, I like the gold pandas from China. However, always buy from a reputable dealer, as stated above. Being a coin collector, he will probably be thrilled as can be just to receive a coin and not a tie or after-shave for Christmas. He will undoubtedly appreciate you thoughtfulness.

Yes, yes, yes!!! Half the fun is in the hunt, and this way he can buy a coin that he would really want in his collection.

The ASE three-coin set would be nice. They are beautiful coins, and should be about in your price range.

liztom15, does your father-in-law use ebay? If he does, you could always do an ebay gift certificate. Although there have been many good suggestions of different coins to buy him, without knowing what he collects you just don't stand much of a chance. I mean, gold and silver covers just about everything the US mint ever put out. Besides, even if you knew what series he likes (especially if it's ninteenth century), you just don't know what he finds appealing or disdains within his field. JMHO.

Heck before they sold out that's all I would have recommended.

My father welcomes any U.S. coins but would never spend the money to acquire coins/sets for himself. I have a subscription with the mint for proof ASE's, proof and mint sets so I just added another of each and give them to him each year for Xmas. He's tickled to death when he sees the sets.
