I was wondering how you determine the difference between the 2 when you only have one on hand. How do I know I have a far or near? Is there other markers apart from the distance from the rim?

Thanks DBM,
I have seen the Charlton but it looks like the difference is less than 1 mm.I was just wondering if other markers existed to identify.I guess I will have to use the microscope. Not that it mathers much apart from the 1926

I am no five cent guy, but I have looked at pictures of these on the various chat rooms. Each time I wonder if (1) there were two matrices each with different letter locations for the CENT legend, or (2) if the mint used different upset mills which caused different rim thicknesses. No clue which it is, but some photo overlays would sort it out.

I don't know if this works for other people, but what I try to do is use a 10x magnifier, and determine how thick the "S" in CENTS looks.

If the space between the S and the rim is significantly less than the thickness of the S, I would say near rim.

If the space between the S and the rim is slightly less or the same as the thickness of the S, I would say far rim.
