Apparently there were some design changes in the first couple years of Jefferson nickels, so there are a couple different reverse types for some years. Can someone explain the different types and/or provide illustrations? Are any of the reverse type/year combinations rare or less common or nicer looking?

The only such coin I know of is the 1939.

The die for the '38 was poorly made, so some details in Monticello (particularly the stairs) are poorly defined or otherwise "wavy." Halfway through 1939, they mint changed the reverse die from the 1938 design to the design that they would use for the remainder of that year and all of 1940. These coins are difficult to distinguish in low grades, however.

Glad that came up. I've heard this before and just couldn't see the difference. Now I do. Thanks for that link

Would the War Nickle years (MM above Montecello) be considered a "Type"?

I just want to note that the current nickels have a sharper image on the reverse.
