I just wanted to know what kind of setup people are running; metal detector, coil, etc.

I just got back into MDing this past month and I have been running my Minelab Excalibur II 1000 with the stock coil and shaft. This thing is heavy! I'm actually looking at getting a balanced straight shaft soon. The Excal works great on the beach the only thing is I wish you could swap out coils. The Excal can't find small gold chains or earrings like my Tesoro LST can. The LST isn't waterproof though. A couple of years ago I was running the Tesoro Sand Shark and really liked it. The only problem was that there is no discrimination and I was digging up a lot of trash. The Excal has great discrimination and nulls on iron. That is why I bought the Excal. Now just looking to see what others have had success with and possible mods I could do to the Excal.

I have always wanted to get into metal detecting - but don't want to spend too much on a Metal Detector. Is there a good unit that sells for $150 or less?

Looking to do mainly coin shooting.

I started out with a Tesoro Compadre which is a turn on and go style detector. It was great learning to use it. After I got the bug I had to get a better one. Brand new I think they are around $160. You might be able to get a used one for around $100-$120. If you were going to use it at the beach though, most detectors including this one have problems with the salt water (lots of false signaling). You would need to get one with ground balance not preset.
