It would be very helpful to be able to look at hign rez photographs of coins that have been graded by a first rate company like PCGS to learn how to grade well especially in differentiating between the subtleties between grades. For example, looking at 15 or 20 Franklin half dollars of MS63 quality then 15 or 20 of MS 64 quality, all by PCGS, would greatly aid in learning about grading.

One of the problems with grading books is that you only see one picture of each grade (if that many). Two MS63's may look entirely different scratch and tone wise but still be MS63. It is the ability to spot a grade from a diversity of coins that is the master's level of grading.

So here is the question. Is there a database of images from previous grading that can be accessed in order to compare. The more images of a particular grade there are the more it solidifies the standard for that grade. It's very much like case law in the legal system. The more case law that is documented on a particular subject the more that subject is rendered "settled" as far as precedent and future legal considerations.

If there is no database, why cant there be one?

Tex

Register for free and then peruse the auction archives. The pictures are amazing and the database is deep.

Bryan,

Very interesting! You see, I would not have thought that the number 2 picture was the same quality as #3. By carefully studying examples you can start to learn the nuances that separate the grades. Now, what would be interesting would be to see three pictures of the next lower grade and see how they differ.

Thank you,
tex

I gotta say 63's aint my thang, these are actually the only 64's I have left graded by PCGS, the rest of them are MS-66 or higher. Another thing with Morgans the Mint Mark makes a difference in what the coin looks like, some Mints didn't use alot of pressure when minting the coins and their coins lack the detail of others and just because it lacks detail doesn't mean a lower grade for a Morgan

I don't post an opinion here without consulting this database. Not even with issues I know well. There's nothing else like Heritage's archives, anywhere.
