I'm not into errors and variants, but an auction last week caught my eye:
http://cgi.ebay.com/1942-over-1941-...NR_W0QQitemZ250049014873QQihZ015QQcategoryZ41092QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is this a legitimate 42/41 overdate? My CDN says that these things go for $400-$500. If so, someone got quite a bargain.

Hi Texas

Its very hard to tell from the auction pic,, and thats not a good thing the 42/41 is very easy to see. with doubling of the 4 and the 1 set at the edge of the 2 on one variety and in the middle on the other.

This coin does not look Like the overdate and that explains why the bids were low. If you have a coin like this that is to sell raw, extremely good pics are needed.

No. That is not the genuine 1942/41 dime. The genuine die shows heavy doubling in the 4 as well.

Far too many ebay sellers have overactive imaginations and greedy inclinations. Witness another current topic wherein the seller is trying to sell a common 1907 Liberty Head nickel for two million bucks.

Rick is quite correct: the 42/41 variant is quite obvious:

Follow the adage Of If it's to good to be tru It proably is, Alo I blew the pic up even with such poor quality of phototgraphy ( I can't do any better) I could not see the slightest hint that it could be what it is said to be

Clearly not the 1942/1 P variety. It doesn't even match the 42/1D and that one is far weaker than the Philly.
