Poll Question
I'd like to know. I have my collection in a broken lock box under my bed. So it doesn't even lock up. But even if it did the robbers could just pick it up and walk out.

I've considered a 1.25 cubic feet safe from a Target around the corner from my house and it's VERY heavy and can be bolted down. No way would a robber carry that down the stairs.

But my question is do you keep your collection in your house?

Poll Choices
Yes, I keep my collection in my house but not locked up
Yes, I keep my collection in my house in a safe
No, I keep my collection at the bank

I use a combination of things: valuable stuff in 2 bank boxes, semi-valuable/stuff I'm working on in a home safe that I lock every night, low value stuff just laying around or in tupperware hidden.

I suggest not keeping coins in your bedroom. That's the first place crooks will look.

I was thinking if I were to get that safe to bolt in down to the floor in the back of my closet?

I live on an Air Force base. I can't think of a safer place to live.

Dang, looks like I should move everything out of the bedroom!
To-do list has long contained 'get a safe deposit box'.

I keep my more valuable coins in the bank, have a bunch in a safe at the house and a bunch under the beds. I know that under the beds is a terrible place but I like to be able to pull out albums and look through them. Just pulled out a Library of Coins album and bought some BU Lincolns on this site last night. Funny how when I look at the empty holes in albums I just get the urge to fill them. I am guessing I am not alone.

I've read that another consideration for safe storage is fire-proofing; in the unthinkable, coins can melt in a home fire. Another reason to consider bank safe deposit, or a truly fire-proof storage container - theft isn't the only problem we face.

I did keep mine in the bedroom closet but moved it about 6 months ago. Good thing, my stepdaughter decided to sneak some friends over while we were at work and someone snuck into our bedroom and stole some cash hidden in that same closet. We put it in there to take on a trip a few days later. If my coins would have been there we might be talking about a missing persons report on her right now. With silver going up I really need to get a safe. A good crook could still find them in my house with a little time. We live in a safe neighborhood but when a naive teen invites the crooks into the house, I need a better system.

I need to get a safe.

Has anyone ever tried camoflauge? Something like keeping my Danscos on the bookshelf with my book collection, but hidden behind dust jackets from my Harry Potter hardbacks or something similar?

I use variations of the "hiding in plain sight" theme. It's plenty secure against theft, but not fire-safe. Therefore, the first step in my new digs will be to anchor a small safe into the concrete slab, at a spot I deem the most survivable in a fire.

I do have a small fire proof safe under the bed. My coin collection has grown waaaay beyond that.

Which is good, because you don't want to know what the puppy did to that safe.

They are not water-proof.

Sounds like a Catch-22 Parklane; your stuff will get wet when they put out the fire...

I have my stuff laying out on a bookshelf in my room. I'm thinking of getting a fireproof gun safe to put them in.

That's why you have home owners insurance.
