Hello, I'm new in the coin collection scene. I have found a penny with an error in the date. The date clearly says 1288.

Can anyone help me with this?

Error-Lincon-Cent?
Thanks!

Brian

no, that a 1988, what your seeing is a corrosion line making it look like a 2.

or possibly a green marker line.

I see what you're saying, but if that were a number 2 it would be twice as big as the other numbers. I agree it looks like corrosion.

One thing to remember is that all modern coins are made from the same master "mold" - so if one coin said 1288, ALL of them would have to say 1288. Your coin probably has a raised gas bubble under the copper plating that is well placed to create the illusion you see.

The date looks normal except for that corrosion underneath the 9's tail tip.
