Firstly please bare with me, I am a real newb but for no obvious reason have suddenly found myself caught with the bug of wanting to collect pre decimal Australian coins.

I am actually a collector of Chinese porcelain but I think I am tired of large boxes in the mail, finding room for things and the idea of investing and enjoying small treasures seems very appealing all of the sudden

Found myself digging through a very random old childhood collection and dug this nice penny out, wondering what people think on the condition? I thought it would be a good test run to post it here, comparing it to what is available online and what I have read it looks like fine condition to me. At first glance in the hand it looked surprisingly crisp, but once I got a good scan of it the circulation wear is pretty obvious.

Any info/guides on starting out would be much appreciated. Cheers.

This is very useful.

Look at the portrait and read the descriptions about what each grade should have and see if you can find where your coin fits.

Hi purple penny.

Thanks for the link, that is a nice guide.

I guess it seems to fall kind of in between very good to fine, because of the extensive wear to but there being no real dents or scratches I guess fine is ok?

Is there any variation at all of the portrait of George V on the penny compared to the florian? The florian in general seems more pronounced, or is this just the silver tricking me a bit?
