Hi Everyone, I just purchased this 1923-d Peace dollar from ebay......from collectorusa. This is actually the photo from ebay. I am very happy with this coin. I did note on the photo prior to buying what looked like an abrasion or something on lady liberty's neck directly across the "E" in WE. Now that I have it in hand, I am not sure what that is. I question if it was planchet flaw or chip or flake...any thoughts would be appreciated........dom

IMO it was polished, the shine off the coin is unnatural.

I'm not sure of the planchet flaw, I do not believe it's PMD, though.

Well what prompted me to buy it was that it comes from Williams Gallery in Bozeman, Montana. Dale william's who owns the gallery used to grade for PCGS and he grades this raw coin as a MS61. They also state that their raw coins will grade at or better than what they advertise on ebay, unless they mention a detail issue with the coin. I am not concerned about it being cleaned. There is no doubt the coin is definitely MS, with excellent luster and cartwheel.

The picture is not large enough to allow for a detailed examination of the area in question. IMO, the coin appears to be cleaned to me as well, unnatural shine with no discernible luster. Poor photography/lighting can also mask luster so that may be the case here.

I purposely took some dark pics, I hope this helps offset how bright the original pic was

Check if there are any traces of cartwheel luster. Also check out the coin with a loupe while holding the coin at a sharp angle (with a bright light of course). You will see many fine lines if it has been whizzed. Lack of cartwheel luster may point to it being dipped.

Surfaces look orginial with the darker shots, hardly looks like the same coin.
Given a MS coin you would have to say the neck issue is some kind of a struck through error.
I don't know how the neck flaw would effect the grade, but this coin is MS63-64 otherwise IMO.

That's odd; their normal photography is to a much higher standard than allowing a coin to look polished. I would recommend Dale Williams' operation without hesitation. My guess is a flaw in the planchet. I suspect it struck fully, and a piece flaked off sometime later - probably almost immediately.
