I'm new to the US grading standards.. This 1917 buffalo what I picked up together with a half dollar 1945 for melt.. I grade it myself at XF40.. Needs some advice here..

EF45 full horn, dark, scratches on buffalo & a few minor rim dings plus an attempt to clean the darkness off the coin.

the wear on the scruff of the bison hump looks more 45 to me than 40. There is that scratch along his back, though. 40 sounds about right.

I agree with your assessment Sander, and the comments above.
I also like the patina of Buffalo nickels like this one. To me is is attractive eye appeal.
