As far as the coin is concerned, I believe the original selling price of around $450 is probably closer to the coins value. $1500 is nuts. As for the grading, Pcgs is not as tough on fbl's as ngc, so it probably wouldn't cross to an ngc holder. Whatever. As far as the seller is concerned, I have known Shane for close to 10 years, and could never imagine him doing anything underhanded......he's truely one of the good guys. They used his ebay site for the charity auction that was put together across the street when Mike Defalco passed away, he's well known. The coin sold for stupid money, I agree with that, but there were no shill bids, of that I am certain. I just read this thread or I would have responded earlier

Quote: it doesn't appear to have full bell lines PCGS criteria for FBL status only requires the bottom bands to be complete while NGC requires both sets to be complete. Quote: Its a easy decision for me when several of the potential buyers have 44% and 66% bidding on this seller's items. Sure they might love this seller's items but I call it something else. So what exactly would you call it then? He is one of the top toned coin sellers on ebay with a dedicated customer base(including myself). It is no surprise that he has repeat customers because they know where to get NT coins that have not been messed with.

Think of the great, older type coins that $1500 could buy .......

I could buy from one to four 19th century type coins in MS-63 for $1,500.00 for my type set rather than spending that kind of money for a Franklin half. Ed ANA LM-3175

Talk about buying the coin and not the slab! My first thought was FLB, really? I was not aware of the easier standards at PCGS. And it does seem like his customers are buying the coin because they really like it. I saw something like this happen earlier this year at another auction house with a Franklin, a monster price was paid for very unusual toning. If the coin is making someone happy, then great!

I'd like to know the story on the first sale. If someone returned it, I'd really like to know why. I know if I got that coin as a MS-66 FBL I wouldn't be happy even at $150 toning or no toning.
But, as you say, someone is happy and we can't know why they paid this much for the coin. People do some strange things and if they have $1500 to buy this coin, money might not really be something they worry about.

I collect GSA dollars, and wanted a nice toned example in the set. I bought a 1883-CC, but when it arrived the tonning wasn't quite like the images on the website. Shane answered my question concerning this, and told me that lighting was a key to capturing the brilliant colors. He was right. A sunlit room doesn't show the colors as does lighting with GE Reveal bulbs or other lighting sources.

Its full lines, but just barely. Kind of an ugly coin for the grade. Someone is smoking crack. Or more likely as stated, shill bidders. Now if only I could get someone to buy my coins for that much over value... ;)
