Quote: I have been working on a photo reference for the 5 mintmark positions--I'll post pictures here when it's ready.
NOOOOOOOOOOO. Please don't. You have no idea how long it took me to just figure out the 3 different ones. If you make a photo array of all 5, I may well spend the rest of my life checking them all out again. On a serious note though, that would make for a good reference guide. Not many people have a good IHC information source.

I have found 4 distinct positions so far, and using Heritage auctions as reference, one position is scarcer than the far right one. If anybody is curious, I'll post some overlays this evening. I'll do one for the 09-S IHC too.

Here's my results for the 08-S mintmark. I hunted for mintmark #5 without luck; if I find it later, I"ll update. #1 and #2 are very close, but I think the "S" in relation to the denticles is different.

Nice work DV! Based on the chart, I have 3 & 4.
Upstate, how far along is your set? I still need the 1909-S :P I'm doing a VG-VF set.

Right now I need -1869,1877,1909s. I have a couple AG coins that need replacing, coins I just "had" when I started the set (fairly common). I only have one 1886 and will probably get both. I bad thing is when I started, I bought a few lots and wasn't very serious, it's the only set I have in a folder. Now I need to get a Dansco because there are nice coins in there, most commons with full liberty's. Picked up a full liberty 1871 last night! (not completely problem free but really nice). The rising price of silver got me into these and I really am enjoying putting this together. I would rather own a 1877 than a 1909svdb. Anyway congrats on your set, I'm actually going to try to finish mine although the last thousand dollars may take some time.

DVcollector Thanks so much for your work here. I will bookmark this thread. My 1908s look to be #3. Nice f12 coin which I'll photograph and post if we ever get a sunny day. Hopefully I'll be asking a similar question when the 1909s become the target but I may need to buy that one slabbed

DVCollector, excellent job on the composite! To Just Carl, of course it is nice to know where all the positions are, but some of the different positions kind of get lumped together. The most common is DVCollector's #1, and the rarest is his #4. #2/#3 is S over S, which is the only one that carries a premium, but due to the mintmark doubling rather than position. And his #4 is the 'far to the right', which Rick Snow calls "snow 5", and "scarce", although he notes that "it may become a sought-after variety in the future".

OK now that is enough there DCcollector. If you find anymore, please don't tell me. I think my best bet is to erase all the S's on all of my coins so I don't have to sit there with a magnifying glass for hours. So now your saying this may also be the same situation with the 1909S? Just what I need. Something to do in my spare time when not staring at the 1908S's. I did print this one out also though so thanks for real. Possibly consider continuing this research and making a book on IHC coins. Would save me the printing out of all your posts. If you do, remember me for a cut for my suggestion.

Thanks everyone! It was an interesting exercise, and I hope it's useful. I should note that #2/#3 is an overlay--which of the two is the S/S? I could not tell, so I declined to mention that. Snow must have updated this guides, because I don't have a Snow-5 in mine. And, where is mintmark #5? I did not see it in ~30 or so coins on Heritage. Quote:

I hear you upstate. I have the 1877. Take your time on this one and find a nice one, they are out there :-) Mine is only a FR2 so I do plan on upgrading to a VG-Fine soon. I'm trying to keep it affordable. 1877 vs.1909-S VDB, I agree, 1877. I do have both though. BadThad will hate us...LOL!

Quote: Mine is only a FR2 so I do plan on upgrading to a VG-Fine soon. And I thought everyone would have at least an AU or MS like all of mine. Quote: cannot imagine competing with Mr. Snow on an IHC guide--I'd lose my eyesight. I go to coin shows all the time ans so far have never seen a book, pamphlet, etc on IHC by anyone. Usually there is at least ome or more dealers at shows with books. I'll try looking and asking this Sunday. And again, thanks for your research. I really don't know what I'll do with the info now that I know which is which but nice to know.
