I'm in the market for a 1908s Indian head. I was wondering if anyone had a resource with authentic mint marks I could examine as I would like to buy this coin raw.
Thank you in advance.

When I joined PCGS, I went for the full Labonsky (or what ever) including the Coin Facts. Well worth it. It shows 17 images of the 1908-S IHC from MS66 rd to F15. Another source would be Heritage Auctions. Good Luck

I went on heritage, checked a bunch as well as a bunch of slabbed coins on ebay. Picked up a VG-F coin for a good price, nice orginial surfaces piece, nothing special. Next will be the 1869 or 1871, the only "easy" one's left.

there were 2 reverses of the 1908 S dies used, each with different placements of the mintmark. One is common, one is rare. post a pic of your coin and we'll see which one you have.

That is interesting. I have about 7 of those so what is the differences to look for?

One of the mintmarks is 'far to the right'. If you have 7 of them, sit them side by side, and look at the placement of your mintmarks. Chances are, one or maybe two of yours will appear off centered to the right hand side. It'll be obvious if you have one of each in front of you. Wish I had a good composite picture to show, but I don't.

OK from your photos I can now see the really small difference. However, not sure which you nean is the rare one. Then went to your third Link and had to search all the VF's to finally see another version. Still I can't see any mention of any addtional values mentioned anywhere. I printed out all three types and will check out later tonight. Since I'm not selling any coins though, it would be nice to put an * next to one of them if it's one of the rarer ones, which I still don't know which that is.

According to Rick Snow, there were 5 reverse dies used for the 1908-S, so 5 different mintmark positions, which includes an RPM (repunched mint mark). I don't have a photo reference for all 5, but you could probably assemble that from the links provided already.

If the mintmark far to the right, it is the rare one. You can always find these for the same price as the common ones, so many Indian collectors just get the rare ones - that could explain why that one collector just has the rare ones.

So far at all coin shows I go to I never heard anything about this and all of those 08S IHC ones I've seen are all about the same price. Big coin show this weekend here so I'll ask around about this. Wonder if any of the dealers there know this. So now there is 5 different ones. Super magnifier time this weekend.

Quote:Normal (common): http://caimages.collectors.com/coin...12976989.jpgslightly to the right (slightly uncommon - no premium): http://caimages.collectors.com/coin...15543099.jpgfar to the right (most uncommon - no premium but there probably will be someday): http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/sho....aspx?sc=770 then scroll way down to the VF35 Indian. For labling purposes I now use Type 1 for your first Link Type 2 for your Second Link. Type 3 for your Third Link. Doing this and checking my Albums and 2x2's where I keep duplicates, I found the following: Album #1, #4 & one 2x2 one each of type 1 = 3 type 1 Album #2, #3 & three 2x2's one each of Type 2 = 5 type 2 Two 2x2's also have one each Type 3 Total 1908S IHC's is 10. Not sure if there is any monitary differences in any of them and now at least know I have 10 of them which I didn't even know.

I have been working on a photo reference for the 5 mintmark positions--I'll post pictures here when it's ready.
