I've been looking at this coin on eBay.

The-Coin-You-Can't-Get

I wish somebody else would just buy it so I can stop thinking about it. Yeah, I know the star adds a premium, but more than three times FMV for the grade? For the "on sale" price? Even making an offer of half that seems over the line for me. But apparently that's what the market can bear.

I'm not bashing the seller - I've purchased from them in the past at what I felt was a fair price, fast shipping, beautiful coin, etc.

I just hate seeing a coin out there that I really really want, but just can't have. It's not even so much that I can't have it (I am sufficiently liquid), but that I can't bring myself to spend that much on a common date coin, even in that condition. I would end up with a very small collection.

So, what's the coin that you just can't get, for whatever reason? It's too expensive to justify, it's beyond your budget, it's too rare to even acquire...

No way will I ever pay such a price for a common piece, and the toning can continue either to make it more attractive (one would hope) or unattractive. I know this can take years sometime, but I have a 43-S MS 67-FB that is also starting to tone even in a so called control environment.

I don't know how its going to look maybe in another 5-10 years, blast white when I bought it in the mid 90's, it's also was graded by NGC.

That is an interesting coin. I would never pay that much for it though. :P

I am just being honest.
Price way too much and toning to me, not that attractive. Also, common.

I wouldn't buy from this seller just based on his return policy. I buy the coin, don't like it, return it, and get a store credit, no cash refund. That's not acceptable.

I know what it's like to be really intrigued by a particular coin, and I'd like to have a star-designated coin in my collection at some point, but that one doesn't do much for me.

The slab and the quality photography are the showpieces here... you can probably find coins pretty close to this one somewhere else. Although, MS67 FB... have you checked the population report on that?

1916 D Merc. I've been collecting them since I was 16 and still don't have that hole filled. Kids come first so maybe when their gone I can save up and fill that hole.

Well, I think the toning is amazing, but the price is insane I think we all agree. When you start getting into MS-67FB territory in terms of grades, prices turn pretty insane already. Thank you all for pooh-poohing it; it makes it easier to break the hypnosis.

Nobody else wants to post coins they can't get?

That Merc is way, way overpriced. And being a person that does not like toning, if it was mine, first thing would be a dip in Acetone.
The coin I can't get? 1913 Liberty Head Nickel.

1787 Fugio 1C - I love the Mind Your Business for the representation of taking responsibility for your actions. And the We Are One is so symbolic of what the country was like back then (and who can argue with a little smiling sunshine!). This one is on the bucket list.

For me it's the pewter Continental Currency. $20k in VF. Not happening any time soon.

(unless that lottery ticket works out!)

fwiw Captain, I appreciate your taste - I think it's a pretty example, too. =) But that price is ridiculous by anybody's standard.
