I have a Ionia Silver cistophoric tetradrachm of M. Antonius and Octavia I have owned for around 30 years now. I believe it is genuine and have no real reason to believe otherwise. A very reputable firm has looked at the picture and indicated "As a „buyer", I wouldn't buy it before having seen it in hand to rule out a cast -- it is a popular type and there are some aspects on the picture that I don't like. But it is very hard to judge a coin from a small picture, it might be perfectly fine."

Now I am running scared and would love to hear other opinions. So here is the coin. I have my fingers crossed.

You have already made all of the points that I would make.

In the picture, it looks OK to me, but I have not reviewed it against known fakes on the Net, which, if I was considering to buy it, I would naturally do.

Even so, like you, I really would like to see such a coin in hand, and have other opinions at the time of purchase, unless the dealer's reputation is beyond reproach.

I am NOT doubting this coin just now, and if it is a good one, it is a mighty fine piece to have in any ancient collection!

Looks like the next step is a Net search, then take it to a reputable dealer, who knows his stuff in this area. If you can't personally take it to such a guy, it is worth the risk to start correspondence then send registered mail to such a dealer, for a considered opinion.

At least you won't be running scared any more!

AND, if you need to sell it years from now, you will have some supporting documentation to support it. I keep all such documentation for all of my more valuable ancients, and for two aureii that I have, that documantation is now over 30 years old!
