When I bought a used car, I found a bag of coins in it. There are approximately 40 euro in coins in this bag.

I have zero interest in collecting them, but am yet to find anyplace that will exchange them without raping me on the exchange rate. I am in the US and just curious if I am missing obvious places. Thus far I've tried quite a few banks.

Any suggestions?

Larger banks like BoA charge 2 to 3 % if you deposit the money into an account. Not sure which ones you are dealing with.

Edit below
I have not tried foreign coins....

I've never tried it, but was told it's done at int'l airports. Large ones have several.

For some reason (weight/bulk?) foreign exchange counters do not handle foreign coins, only foreign banknotes.

Keep them for a European holiday or exchange them with someone who might be heading that way.

Umm, what weight (approximately) are we talking about here? If everything else fails, you could mail them to a friend of mine in California who would then give you the face value equivalent in US dollars. This way you would have to pay postage instead of a commission ... Getting foreign coins exchanged at a bank or forex place will indeed be difficult or expensive. But maybe a local coin club in your area is interested in a donation? :)
