Okay, I have this coin (1940 Canada 50 cents) that I will send to ICCS to get graded, but it has tape residue.
1-Should I take of the residue before sending it to ICCS?
2-Does the tape residue affect the condition of the coin while it is still on it?
3-If I should take it off what brand of acetone or cleaning product should I get at local stores (Walmart, etc)
Thanks!

I can't really answer 1 or 2 but with 3 just make sure it is 100% pure acetone. You can test it by pouring some in a glass cup/dish and leaving it out to evaporate. There should not be any residue in the bottom when it is done. If you use some of that on your coins you'll have that film on your coins.
Becareful, it is flameable. I've got a jar with top I use. Also don't let your coin get scratched on the bottom of the jar.

In most cases it will not grade with tape residue on the coin. An acetone bath is the best way to remove tape residue. Use pure acetone and a glass container. Leave it immersed for an hour or two. Rinse with water and finish with distilled wate rinse. You can lightly pat the surface dry with an absorbant, non-abrasive cloth. But I prefer to blow-dry. As always here are the precautions: Acetone is very flamable and the vapors are noxious. Use in a well ventilated area and avoid ignition sources.

I did not mean that if they would grade it with the tape residue on it. I meant does the tape residue, whilst on the coin, damage the coin itself (ex;corrosion, etc)

It really is difficult to know the answer to that without knowing what type of tape is on the coin. Some tapes do have corrosive substances in them. Some do not. Leaving it on a coin is not smart in either instance since if nothing else it will make part of the coin appear different than the rest. Dipping in Acetone should, might remove that tape but also, it may not. Since it really should come off, it should be worth a try. There are some other considerations though. Is that coin worth the cost of going out to buy Acetone. Usually it comes in a can for about $5. For the small amount you need you would be left with a large amount of a substance that is highly inflamable. Then there is the cost of gasoline for a car to go to a store just for Acetone. Now after all that, you also spend money on sending that coin in for grading and slabbing. You may want to consider all the costs to see if that coin is worth it. You should also do a search on this forum with the Search tab at the top for coin cleaning, cleaning coins, Acetone.

My coin is a Canada 50 cents, I think it could grade MS65 OR BETTER , it is in perfect condition, check on ebay, and say I am probably wasting my money, lol: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1940-Canada...380235555669

Word of warning about acetone. You do not want it to come into contact with plastic as many plastics start to melt when in contact with acetone.

Glass is best but you can also use it safely with #5 plastic(polypropylene).

Good points. Not sure which TPGS does this but someone mentioned that if you send it to them, they will do the tape removal for you. If they do it professionally, might be the safest method rathor than experimenting.
