In would think higher than 62, any thought to CAC?

This is a situation where "buy the book before the coin" (and some perseverence) paid off big time.

Congratulations!

I think maybe the dings on the shield is why
the 62 and not a 63. Even though I believe that
they are from the mint handling process etc. they are
still present. I could not find where CAC would accept
this medal anyway. Maybe when stacks takes their pics.
of it for the auction, bidders may see it better and think
it would be worth a re slab. ?

I guess I can put my $20 away now that its 5k. Great thread and story at I read of this medals journey. I hope you do well in the end and knowing Stacks you probably will. Continue to keep us updated as I want to know what the hammer price ends up being.

Thanks and i'll keep my fingers crossed.
This is my first real auction on any numismatic item
( ebay don't count:)Whoop's, CCF does count and they are real :)But I think I picked a reputable auction house in stacks. They have been very helpful with the whole process. If there is a downside to this whole thing it is that I most likely will never see the medal again. It was kind of cool to look at and hold etc. What ? O.K., now knock it off. It's a chunk of metal not a woman :) Not going there :)
One thing left that I want to do is to get a pretty close estimate as to how many of these that there are left in the U.S. I know NGC is the only TPG that has the X-lge. slab and according to all that I have found out about them is that 75 ea. were supposedly minted but only 60 ea. actually
got out. Out of those 60 ea. 30 ea. were sent to norway the following month after minting. I saw the two NGC ones that went at the last big auction from stacks. Want to check the registry @ NGC to see how many they did up total. Figuring in maybe losses, damage, unaccounted for etc. that one
medal I had in hand for a little while could possibly be only one of a dozen or so left around the states. If that were a coin it would be pretty rare in MS grade or any grade
for that matter. Well, will know for sure in another 8 weeks.

Rest in Peace

I bought my first coin book in 1964, a pocket price guide. Dell, I think, or Whitman, with prices that Stacks guaranteed to pay.

I have the two small, thick & thin, ones in Silver so hope you get a big number for yours. I need to get mine to NGC as I think they will beat the ones they already have.

From what I see it looks like the Final Bid was $6,325 including the buyers fee. Whats not to like?

I was also confused. Fredd, The reserve was 5K and when I logged on to look it showed Bidding ended @ $5,500.00
Thanks Coin for that info. I'll have to go look again.
Either way I will get a note from Stacks on it.
Thanks too Darth. Now I feel better.
Now I see what happened. $5,500.00 plus BP (15%)
equals $6,325.00
I get 95% of the hammer price.
Wow ! Stacks makes $1,100.00 on this one all around.
No wonder that they have been around for a long time.
Smart bunch.
