The graphic explained it all, the faces are 180 degrees opposite with coin alignment while the faces are aligned with each other for medal alignment. All US coins have coin alignment.

Canadian coins,since 1908, are medal alignment,just to be different from our neighbors to the south

^^^ And, the 1 cent always was (except for a couple of rare pre-Confederation varieties)

I've always been curious about how collectors react to coinage. IMHO medal looks a LOT nicer in a slab and storage pages.
