Where can someone walk in off the street and shop for a good magnifier?

All I have now is a full size glass but I need something portable.

I live in Michigan ...anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

There are many out there but I have found the one that Radio shack stocks (not listed in catalogue) a loupe with 5x 10x 7 15 x magnification for less than $10 works very well.
They are inexpensive enough that you can afford to lose it but it gives very good clear magnification.

I got the same one at Radio Shack also. 5x 10x 15. Less than 10 bucks. Plastic though, I was looking for glass. They are not so easy to find any more. Coin shops sell the Baush & Bom for 10 bucks. Other than those 2 places I have no idea where to get them. I've searched far and beyond.

Thanks for the input guys...I was hoping not to have to order one online.

Maybe I'll check the one at Radio Shack.

Depends on what you want to spend.

You can also find loupes at geologist sites and stores.
I have several loupes and this year I added some beloma loupes because I found they have a larger round glass.

Not familiar with that state but do they have a place called Walmart? If so try their jewlery department. Also, if they have them try the Dollar Stores. I actually found a large variety at flea markets for anywhere from .50 to $3, from 2X to 30X, from the size of a half dollar to 4" diameter. Even some of the cheaper mail order companies like Carol Wright often has some good deals on them. However, my best suggestion is a flea market if they have them in that state. Just to far from Illinois for me to know what goes on up there.

Try a jeweler's supply house. Optivisor is still the nuts, but doesn't fit in your pocket (unless you have those oversized baggy pants, I guess.) A doublet or triplet gives the most optically clear view, but we are not doing diamonds!!

Kingsley North (http://www.kingsleynorth.com) comes to mind right off. Also, try pjsupply @

Look for a Lapidary (rock shop) in your area also.

Keep in mind the jewelry trade is pretty much a 10X norm. Getting 14X or above is possible, but 6X or 7X would be tough.

Printers' supply houses also have "linen testers"-- a pocket magnifier.

If you can learn to use a watchmaker's loupe you'll be a real hotdog at a coin show. It also leaves both hands free. Look here:

Happy hunting!

A 3+6=9 Eschenbach. For me, there is no substitute.
