I received a roll of War Nickels today I purchased online and upon inspecting them, I noticed what appears to be a variation in the placement of the 'S' MM on a 1942. I scanned it in the photo with another 42 S so you can see the difference. Some of these had a lot of luster compared to the other 3 rolls of War Nickels I have purchased previously so I just want to be sure this isn't the sign of a fake. What do you all think? Astute observation and a fair question ... No fakes involved here. Both coins appear genuine from here.
All USA coinage mint marks were hand applied prior to 1990 ... so it is normal and expected to find slight variations in MM location.
Your 1942-S Jefferson both appear to me to be within the norm of what to expect from the era of hand punched MM.
For fun ... do some research on MM varieties ... these are the result of trying to correct ill-placed MM by hand ... and the Jefferson series has a few.
Your coin IMHO is not one of them ... just normal MM variation due to the technique in place at the time.

Interesting how much range there is in the mint mark.

You are welcome. You would have received more feedback if you had posted this in the correct forum ... "Modern US coins". Hoping my limited viewpoint reply served to meet your needs. David

I was just looking at Merc Dimes and I noticed a pretty reasonable variation in placement in some there, too! Pretty strange considering how small the area is the mint workers had to work with!

interesting find, I think I will check my almost full roll of extra War Nickels to see if I have any noticeable differences like that. Pretty cool looking

As noted most MM's were hand installed in the past. Full well knowing what many people drink during lunch time you should realize that it is amazing that the MM's made it on the coin at all. Might explain why no P's on Phily coins. They tried but were to drunk to find the coins.

Oh the found the coins alright, what do you think they used to get drunk on? It's the hammers they had problems with. Those and the thumbs.
