I bought my first ever Seated Liberty dollar a few weeks ago to fill a gaping hole in my Dansco 7070 album. Most of the ones in nice condition I've seen were way above my current budget ($400 and up), so I kept looking for one that was within my budget (under $200) but still looked halfway decent.

Here's what I ended up with:

Value-Of-My-1871-Liberty-Seated-Dollar

[The coin is much shinier in hand, to the point where I fear it might have been dipped at some point.]

The seller self-graded it as VF, although I'm not expert enough to judge for myself unfortunately. If it has been cleaned, I'm sure that will affect the value, but I paid close to $180 for it and am wondering whether I did OK with it or not. Again, this is for my type album and was not purchased as an "investment grade" coin.

Thanks!

I would probably grade this one as a Fine; typically you'd see some of the letters of Liberty on the shield visible on a VF coin.

It was probably cleaned or dipped at some point if it is very shiny with that wear level. But - that's not uncommon with these old dollars. They are hard to find and often counterfeited.

I don't see anything to make me think your's isn't genuine (not an expert on these though) - you might consider weighing it as a quick check - it should weigh 26.73g minus a few tenths for wear.

Seems like a decent coin to me and I think the price was in the ballpark given all of the above.

Good deal. In fine, which I aggree this is, it values at 400. 180 is what an AG would go for.

I'd grade this VG. Below is a link to a grading guide for Seated dollars.

If it is shiny it may well have been polished, which tends to hurt the value more than being dipped, but I think you still did fine with this purchase.

I agree with Bilbo that this looks like a VG. I don't see anything that says fake to me. It does look a little bit bright but for $180 I think you did just fine.

It looks like a great coin but I do think it might have been dipped too.

it looks closer to a fine and probably cleaned at some point. assuming its genuine, $180 is a good price for the coin. nothing suspicious jumps out at me, but its worth showing to an experienced collector that you know for an opinion.
