Wow ... that is impressive. This coins exhibits a massive lamination error. Appears from here to be the real deal ... in fact ... one of the most impressive I have seen on the forum. I do not have enough knowledge to state with metallurgical certainty the causes of lamination ... but the end result is that after the coin is struck sections of the coin peel away ... leaving behind what you have. David Edit ... BTW this coin is dated 1943 ... not 1942 as stated in your thread title.

I agree with nickelsearcher - that's a huge and impressive looking lamination error. I don't know what laminations go for, but somebody out there is gonna want that coin.

Since the laminated piece is missing it is actually a delamination error. Laminations and delaminations are seen a lot on War Nickels. This one is nice so it could bring a couple bucks but I can't believe anyone would pay big money for one on a War Nickel.

I just picked up a similar 1943-P nickel delamination. The delamination is so bad that it sticks up like a prong at the edge of the coin. I'll post a photo when I get a chance. $5.

Would have been extra cool if this were also the '43-P doubled eye! :)
Still though, pretty neat!

Here's the 1943P referenced above. The crack makes it through the obverse at the edge, but isn't as interesting as the reverse.
