I became a member of NGC this summer and I sent in my five "free" (but not really free) coins. They said the early bird option has a 12 business day turn around. Well, they have had my coins for almost a month. I have tracked them online and they said my coins have been received and reviewed but not certified yet.
Any ideas on what I should do? Should I call and complain? Is an email better? It's been well over 12 business days!

Unfortunately, there's not a whole bunch you can do but wait. People who can grade on a professional basis don't grow on trees; one very large submission can kill a TPG's schedule for two weeks. "Early Bird" right now is showing a 16 business day turnaround - 22 calendar days at the very least - and that can change on a daily basis. This isn't a business where you can call in temporary help when the workload spikes.

SuperDave,
You made some good points here- points I've not thought of. You are right. They can't just hire on some temp. Thanks for the feedback.

What it takes is what it takes. They probably got bogged down certifying a few million San Francisco mint American Silver Eagles. I have had submissions take anywhere from two weeks to two months. I would rather have them get it right than get back a mis-labeled coin.

I have had 9 world coins at NGC since 6/29 waiting to be graded. I sent in 3 5oz ATB and they turned them around in a week. Both were the cheapest level available. I also notice that they are hiring World coin graders (check their website). Maybe their graders were stolen by someone else, or preferred to live in California over Florida... I don't know what PCGS' turnaround is...might shoot a big hole in my theory

the good part is usually once they get graded and and it says they are going through quality control it usually goes by pretty quickly. I have had coins there for 2 calender months stating they had been received and then one day they said scheduled for grading and the next they said quality control and then the next they were finalized and shipped. The big coin shows can slow the process down quite a bit also if there are more than one in a month or one back to back in 2 months time because they also have submissions come in through the shows that are paying for next day so that bumps every other tier back

I was going to put a post about why my world coins have been sitting there with "Received" status. Looks like everyone is having problems with the delay. 2 months is a very long time! Wonder why the turnaround times have increased so much! Anyone know if PCGS has such a long turn around time too?

It must be just world coins because I just sent in some modern US and they turned around in 5 days - on the cheap tier!

Any word on NGC turnaround on the Modern Tier for the 25th Ann. Eagles? I wanted to drop my box off today, but, FEDEX would not ship to a PO BOX, so, I went home....now, reading this thread, I'm nervous about the wait...sounds like the coins would be out a heck of a lot longer than I thought...I was hoping 2 weeks..guess I was dreaming..I am stuck..just stuck what to do....the ONLY reason for choosing NGC is the ER label, and, 17 dollar/Eagle price(AND, my "FREE" submission with my ANA membership....Anacs is/maybe out, as they only use a "SET" label, which brings no premium, BUT, only 10 dollars per coin to slab.....or, in the final analysis, is the slightly lower final sales price of the Anacs Slab an OK acceptable option? Hard to gather sales figures, as sales for all 3 companies from the publics' submissions not available yet, only big-house chain figures.........Anacs would have the sets done in roughly 30 days, and, sounds like NGC will take that long, maybe longer...I'm sure PCGS is at least 30 days..their cost exceeds $200 per set, I believe--YIKES! "Best" problem of the year, I hate to whine about this, I just don't have the experience to know what the heck I'm doing yet with all the choices...I need some experienced members to chime in. With 4 sets to be graded, it seems a decent gamble I MIGHT be able to make a MS/PF 70 set to sell(2,500 or so?), which would more than pay for a set for me to keep..... Thanks Calvin

Sorry I forgot to get back to all of you this summer. I did finally get my coins back. Drum roll, please. My double eagle came back a 64, my 1881 Carson City dollar a 63, my $10 Gold Indian a 62, my $10 Liberty gold a 61 ( what the heck), and my 1799 was certified damaged but authentic. Yes, I knew it was before I sent it. Over all I am satisfied. I want to send a bunch of other coins but it takes time and money.

I realize this is a few years later from the original post; but in case someone with similar questions stumbles across it. This is probably one of the best threads online about this/these TPG questions. It doesn't delve into the 'for and against' TPG debate. Anyway... since this first was posted, it seems NGC has changed the format of statuses. It now sits at the 'Scheduled for Grading' status for the longest period. Once at 'Grading/Quality Control' that's when things speed up. The rest of the info here still applies today, and is very valid. It all depends on the time of year, if there's big shows coming up etc. My only input beyond anything already said: If you're a world coin collector (especially Canadian coins) and want things graded, what may be considered, for example, an error in the country of origin, well, it may not exactly be considered an error at NGC/PCGS et al. Learn from my mistake. My costly mistakes. Ha-ha (If you can't laugh at yourself, as it were). As of today, the posted turn time for the 'Economy' tier (or 'poverty tier', as I call it) is 35 business days. That's quite a while. At least a few months. But it's just after the holidays, and there's a few big shows coming up. Hope this pro-actively added to the conversation of a couple of years ago. Cheers.
