Nice find Tim! Boy, I wish the left coast had this kind of stuff to find. The east coast is so much more historical, coin wise. I did find a Barber dime out here and a 1908-S IHC though :-)

They get dropped, then over time, rain softens up the soil and the weight of the coin just keeps going down. Another scenario would be, someone buried it but unlikely.
