I was checking a '61 proof set against my Cherrypicker's Guide and I got a hit! The Franklin half is a DDR. I'm still working on macro photography, so I'll have to show you the Cherrypicker's photos for now.

The coin is perfect. No damage that I can see with a 10X loop. It's still in the original mint cello and the mint envelope was unopened when I got it.

I'll guess at MS-65 or MS-66, but it's gonna be close on the FBL. I can see all the lines in the right light, but I don't know what a TPG looks for in the bell lines.

I'll shoot a full coin photo tomorrow and let you tell me what what you think, but for now, this is what the doubling looks like.

Doubling on E PLURIBUS UNIM and along the lower part of the eagle.

The FBL designation and other detail descriptors are irrelevant for proofs as they are assumed to be struck with full details. For proofs, you only need to be concerned with the coins being Brilliant, CAM, or DCAM.

I would disagree with MS-65 and say PF-67 (don't mix them up)! And yes, that does look like the DDR in the cherrypickers. One of the best/easiest places to check for varieties is your own collection.

Geez, I know the difference. I have no idea why I said MS. I was just excited to find the DDR.

Here are the full pics of the coin. It's shot through the mint packaging, so anything that looks like damage to the coin is just lines on the cellophane.

I had 2 proof sets so I was able to compare the sets to the Cherrypicker's guide.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake. I'll try not to do it again. I think I said MS because 99.9% of the coins I've ever posted were business strikes.

This has not been my day. HERE are the full coins. The first 2 I posted were 1962 Proofs.

I don't really see the doubling in these images; apparently it's pretty subtle and the mirrored proof surfaces make it hard to tell doubling from reflections. Does this "FS-802" DDR variety carry a significant premium?

For those that don't already know, the FS-801 DDR Franklin proof is the "big one" listed in the Red Book and retail price guides. It has very obvious doubling on E Pluribus Unum. Here is a photo of an example graded PR-67 by PCGS. This coin sold for $8050 in a June, 2011 Heritage auction. Now that's a doubled die!

The premium is about 4X the normal value. This coin should be worth about $75 dollars. The PUP is the L in PLURIBUS. The doubling makes the top of the L look very thin. Once I saw that I was able to see lines in all of the other letters E PLURIBUS UNUM and the doubling of the eagles tail feathers.

I've never found a variety in a sealed proof set, and although this isn't a "strike it rich" find, it made my day! As for finding an FS-801, I don't have that kind of luck!

I had this proof set for almost a year and never checked it. I still have to check the other coins in the set for varieties. I know I'm correct that it's a FS-802 and If it should bring in the $75 to $80 range. That would make me very happy!

I'm in the middle of packing all of my camera equipment and I hope to have a nice setup when I get moved. I'll have access to some really nice equipment when I get there. If I can get some better pictures then, I'll post them.
