I have a Morgan silver dollar that appears to have a date error. It says 188 without the last digit. I've never seen anything like it. At first I thought it might of worn off but I don't know if thats possible because the definition of everything around it appears to be intact. There are no unusual marks that I can identify that give me any indication of what it was supposed to be. I'd love it if anyone could give me info on it.

This should probably be listed in the VAM section, and might be able to be identified by the experts with better pics....

Cool coin!

If more than one coin was struck with the missing number, it could be listed as a VAM. Most coins that are Struck Through Grease are unique, if so, it would be an error. What ever was blocking the 8 more than likely fell off or was removed after this coin was struck. I don't remember seeing any VAMs with only 3 numbers in the date.

Let me know if the coin has a mint mark on the reverse below the tail of the eagle. I'll check to see if any missing number VAMs are listed. Also, can you tell if any shape of the number is there? Even if it's just a faint outline. It would help with my search.

Thanks!

Ok I've been looking at it through a magnifying glass and there is the faintest outline of what looks like a 1. It has no mint mark so I guess its a philly.

If it is the result of a grease strike through it doesn't matter how many of them exist it shouldn't be a VAM.

It wouldn't be. A couple exist, named long ago and "grandfathered" in to the current list, but grease fills are no longer listed on their own merits. They make an interesting aside on an existing variety, though.
