My wife needs a new car, as the frequency of repair bills on her car is getting out of hand. As we were working out the deal with the dealer I asked if I could pay for the car in "fifty cent pieces". I was mostly joking, but the salesman said "hey, cash is cash, of course you can". So I am very tempted to order in the purchase price worth of halves and see what I can find before I turn them over to buy the car. Wouldn't it be fun to have the chance to go through $20,000 in halves and not have to worry where to'dump'them Edited by unholyroller 08/15/2011 07:52 am

That would be awesome. I should have done that when I got my first car. I would have only had $5000 to search through, but that would still have been a lot of fun and I am sure some silver.

Hmmmm...
A few years ago I bought a used car for $12,000. Just for laughs, I tried to pay for it with $100 bills. The dealer told me they couldn't accept cash payments above $10,000 because of all the extra paperwork they had to file in order to deposit that much cash (something to do with anti-laundering laws or something). Maybe it varies from dealer to dealer.
The real question, of course, is how you would actually transport $20,000 worth of halves...

A dealer that turns down cash is an idiot, because that dealer is one that would be turning down a sale to me.
Transport wouldn't be that big of a deal, it's only 40 boxes...that's only four average people in a car.

A dealer may well turn you down or actually charge you more for doing the Half Dollar paying. Due to so many banks now charging for bulk coinage deposits, a dealer may also do that. At first he may not mention this but after he discusses such a transaction with his superiors, you could end up paying much more for you car. Also, due to stories of the short roll thing people pull, they may have you wait until all the coins are counted before your purchase could be finalized. Might sound like fun but you really should double check with that dealer just in case.

This is not as much fun but you could pay for the car with gold coins and buy a car for less than say...$50 saving you a bundle in sales tax. I expect there is some law against this, though.
I have been using money to buy everything for years and vendors cannot refuse US currency -- that is if you're in the US.

If you can find a bank that can get you 40 boxes before you need the car, I would definitely do it. Even if they had to count all the coins while you were there, they can count while you fill out all the paperwork. It's basically a win/win situation. You get to search 40 boxes and no worries about dumping. Even if you find 1 silver per box...min: $200-$600. Better invest in some gloves or a lot of hand santizer first though.

You should call them back and just make sure. Because that dealer may not think that you might actually do that. maybe he thought you were kind of joking.

I dont see why not ! If he say yes then just do it and I'm sure you ll find a lot of silver , btw you dont have to order all the boxes from the same branch and I'm sure many miners did 40 boxes week more then ones.

WEll legally they would have to accept it since it is legal tender. They may try to hem and haw or try to tack on paperwork fees and such. I've paid for 100+ dollar purchases in $2 bills, prez dollars, etc. before.

Neither of these statements are true, there are no laws that says private dealership/company has to accept any US currency or coins that they don't want to. I have seen plenty of convenient stores that have a sign saying they will accept nothing over a $20 and they do not have to. I have no idea where this myth started but that is exactly what it is, a myth because it has absolutely no backing to it

It was said that if you went to the bank to pay on your loan, the bank had to accept whatever you offered (ie- $10,000 in cents) as payment, or the loan was negated. There is no law outside anti-discrimination laws that say a store owner/seller actually has to do business with you. If you wish to pay $20,000 in halves, the dealer can simply say, "No thanks, no sale". I personally don't see the humor in doing this, anyway.

Im sure they are not obligated to accept whatever denomination you want to use . But if he said he would take , just make sure and use this oportunity of a life time ! Just imagine how many silver would come with and the banks won have a problem to supply you . We all know the problem is to dump so if was me I wouldnt even be here asking you but only would be there later on the halves tread showing uou the results lol !. In times of a depresed economy when people have no money to buy anything , if I was a car dealership owner I would have a lot more to worry then how to cash 20 grand in halves ! actualy I would love to come 10 people to buy on my store using half dollars to pay then dont sell anything and dont make a penny ?! What about the competition ?! His better take because he knows many other would take in his place ! I wish I have a place to dump 20 grand at ones , you ll make the suply whoever is it to get coins from the botton of the pile so trust me it ll brink a lot silver specialy at once ! Please come get halves in my area because you ll take most of the marked coins from circulation bringing to light halves that are under the dust for ages , I would even disclose to you a bank where they would give 40x1000 bags with no problem it may take them 2, 3 weeks but yes no problem upon you open a account with them! Go for it ! Least ask the dealer how much would him accept if not the whole amount . Even better look around for a place where they would accept this payment and ding ding !
